The entire frame and chassis of the vehicle is grounded via a heavy gauge cable from the (-) post of the battery. Various jumpers are used to ensure the (-) 12 volt side of the battery is present on body panels, framework, etc. throughout the vehicle.

The *best* place to connect electrically operated devices (audio especially) in the vehicle is AT the (+) & (-) battery posts - or as CLOSE to those points as practical. Doing so, will reduce the chances of objectionable "noise" being introduced to the radio on the power leads. This is especially true when trying to connect the ground or (-) lead(s) for equipment. "Dirty" power can actually be heard through speakers as static, hiss, popping, whine, etc. The battery is the cleanest source of power in the vehicle and should be used whenever clean power is essential.

Suggestions for a place to ground the amp wire


for clean ground go back to battery that is the best but so is any good clean spot on body frame. you want the best without interference ,that's battery

Instructions
    • 1
      Lift the Expedition's hood manually. Remove the negative battery cable end from the negative battery terminal using the battery wrench. Make sure to put the cable end in a place where it cannot accidentally contact the battery during the repairicon1.png.
    • 2
      Examine the serpentine belt routing diagram for the location of the Expedition's automatic belt tensioner. The Expedition's belt routing diagram is on the fan shroud.


    • 3
      Move the automatic belt tensioner off the belt with the serpentine belt tool. Pull the belt off the alternator pulley by hand before releasing the pressure on the tensioner with the tool and allowing the tensioner to slowly move back into position.
    • 4
      Remove the Expedition's charging circuit harness from the back of the alternator by hand. Remove the ground strap for the alternator's ground stud using the socket set.
    • 5
      Remove the mounting bolts that hold the alternator to the alternator bracket using the socket set. Lift the alternator out of the Expedition's engine bay by hand. Set the replacement alternator into the alternator bracket manually.
    • 6
      Install the alternator mounting bolts by hand first and then tighten them with the socket set. Connect the charging circuit harness by hand. Bolt the ground strap to the ground stud with the socket set.
    • 7
      Reinstall the serpentine belt onto the alternator pulley by reversing your removal method. Bolt the negative battery cableicon1.png back onto the battery using the battery wrench. Close the Expedition's hood.

The end of the positive battery cable broke where it connects to the battery. How do I replace it?


Go to the auto parts store and purchase a replacement clamp. Expect to pay less than $6.00 for the clamp. Cut the wire back to a clean place, strip about 1/2 inch insulation away and insert it into the clamp and tighten.

I wondering were the best place to ground an amp would be and how do i get to that spot ?


Assuming this is for in the trunk, you could use one of the taillight mounting bolts but I'd recommend sanding some paint down on sheetmetal near the amp itself and using your own self-tapping bolt on interior steel. You wanna keep that cable as short as possible, after all.

Battery keeps running down, what is the best way


The new alternator may have a closed regulator draining the battery,put a volt meter,or test light in line with the ground cable,remove the ground cable,and put the test light clip on the ground cable,and the tip of the test light to the negative battery post,or contact,it does not have a post,If it lights the test light,and it does not fade off,then there is a draw,unplug the alternator regulator plug,see if that turns the test light off,if it does,then the alternator is defective,then if need to continue testing,remove the interior light fuse,completly,and then pull one fuse at a time,to see if the test light goes off,when it does,that is the circuit that is drawing the battery down.The clocks will pull to many amps sometimes and cause this also,be sure to disconnect the battery over night to make sure the battery is good also,so you wont be doing all this for nothing,and you may want to have the battery load tested.

Hello! Disable ignition by unplugging the coil wire...Using a volt meter place positive lead on the positive terminal of the battery...place the other lead on the battery lead of the starter...Turn the key to start...If you read .5volts or higher there is a high resistance in the starter cables or ground cables...
