SOURCE: 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix Thermostat

as you face the engine the thermostat bell is on the right (drivers side) Follow the radiatoe hose. Remove the two bolts and raise the bell still attatched to the hose. the thermostat is there with the rubber seal. You can gently pry the thermostat out with a screwdriver or something similar. Put in new thermostat be sure it is the same as the old one, and then replace or change the seal (be sure it is the smae size and thickness as the old one as I got the wrong size from Napa) Then replace the bell, and tighten, but not over tighten. I hope this helps!

this trans is the 4T65E. It needs a 4th clutch hub. The splines strip off around 120k or more because they weren't hardened from the factory. The new ones have the hardened splines. The trans needs to come out and be partially torn down. I've fixed alot of these. Change the EPC solenoid while you are there. They wear and hang up causing intermittent harsh shifts

You can drive them forever without changing the hub but you'll never have 4th gear

2002 pontiac grand prix gt cuts off every time it is put in gear. it will go in reverse and 1st gear without cutting off, but when i pit it in 2nd, 3rd, or overdrive and press the gas paddle it cuts off....


I'm guessing your converter is staying locked up and stalling your car or either have something jamming up inside.. What transmission is it? I'd suggest dropping your transmission pan off and seeing if there is any material in there

This may not be a transmission related problem, it sounds more like an ignition misfire, have the plugs and plug wires ever been replaced? I would suspect the problems lie there. If you install new plug wires make sure you route them and loom them up in the plastic plug wire clips exactly as from the factory or you can have more problems with cross fire.

some of the trannys has straps in them that sometimes needs to be tightened and that could be the cause of it

have u run a trouble code test? if u have a problem with the electronics of the trans controls it will set a code, go to any Kragen or Autozone and they will test it for free.

The button with a "D" with a circle around is for engaging and disengaging overdrive. Your transmission typically will have 4 forward driving gears...by having overdrive disengaged your car will not go into the 4th gear. Disengaging overdrive should only be used when towing or traveling in mountainous terrain.
