Could be broken ducting letting hot air escape or on the intake side drawing too much outside air in. could be the fan unit not pushing enough air

You can put a higher temp thermostat and that should help, but it should at least have 170 degree air right now if it was working right. There are two other things you might check for, the diverter door make some sound when you switch from heat to cool and back, I can't tell you for sure if it is a manual, vacumn or electric but that would definitely cause it to blow cold air. There is also a valve which cuts off circulation to the heater core when your not using it. This valve will be in line with the heater hoses going to your heater core. I have seen some that were actually part of the heater core box. I feel pretty sure one of these will be your problem. Also if your car is low on coolant it would not heat properly. Hope this can help you!

I had the same problem that I just fix by flushing the heater core out with a hose.   take the two hoses off the fire wall and put the water to it and let flush.  my heater is putting out 150 dg. F  of hot air.   I'm so excited!  i will stay warm now.

Are you sure there are no air pockets in the cooling system ?
You should have heat anytime the engine temp is above 140 degrees regardless what the thermostat is doing.

Both AC and Heat blow the same air.


Sounds like a flow flap or vacuum control head issue. The system uses 1 blower motor and one fan resistor. Both systems are intergrated to produce a BLENDED temperature. This means that to raise A/C temps originating at say 20 degrees to come out of the ducts at 45 degrees for cooling you need airflow through the heater core WHILE the A/C is on.
This is done with a blender flap. Hot air that is potentially matching the water thermostat (165 degrees) is expelled to blend with the 20 degree air to raise the discharge temperature to 45 degrees and up.
In winter, the A/C is engaged by design to keep the compressor lubed with oil. Usually this happens in Defroster mode, but through either Design or defect, may occur in heat position.
Now some of the Digital Climate control units have a Diagnostic sequence you can activate with certain button pushing combinations. Research Your Model, Year and then Climate Control Diagnostics on the internet. The sequence is something Dealers know about.
This Diagnostics would identify a malfunctioning Flap valve actuator.
I recommend people to visit a Salvage yard which allows you to dismantle a car yourself and see how the car is built.

Air conditiner cools on right side but not on left side


It can be issue with blend door actuator or vacuum leak or loose vacuum hose connection.

Yes it is.........simply because heater cores are such a pain in the **** to change. Sounds like a good deal.....maybe try to jew them down $100 to cover labor cost! You never know! Good luck!

Hi John,
Your right with your diagnostics, you have a blend door problem. If your switching to cool air and it is still hot then you also have a heat exchange unit fault, this is the component that changes the water flow from hot to cool by shutting off. If it is not operating correctly this will give you constant hot air no matter where you temperature switch is positioned.
As for the warm air while the engine is cold, sounds like the blend door is still open to atmosphere tempreture and if it is hot outside will pull that hot air into the inside of the vehicle.
Have the heat exchange valve checked, and the only way the check blend door operation is to remove the wiring from the blend doors and have the circuit tested. If the circuit is ok then the blend doors will need to be replaced.

I have a 2000 pontiac grand prix with a digital climate control system. The heat quit working, it doesn't blow out any heat. Now that it is warm outside the air stopped blowing out any air. The digital temperature on the climate control is not correct. When it states that it is below 30 degrees on the ext and it is warm outside the air wont be cold. Once it starts going above 30 degrees the air gets colder. Today the blower stop working all together. Was told it maybe the climate control unit was bad. You can hear the door opening/shutting when you switch the temp from cold to hot. But there was no heat blowing out whatsoever in the winter time. Could you please give me your opinion on whether or not it is the climate control unit or something else?

It may be the valve that controls the amount of water entering heating core but I'm wondering if your engine thermostat isn't stuck open. This is what controls the coolant temperature in your engine. It closes off while engine is off. It will remain closed after you start your car until the water warms to a certain temperature then it starts to open enough to keep your car at the proper operating temperature. If it stick open then it will take a lot longer for the engine to heat up and on smaller cars might never heat up enough for your heater. If you live in very cold climates such as where I live in Wyoming, we have to change to a higher degree thermostat so we have a good heater when it's 30 below zero.

Be very cautious here but one way you can check this is to put a piece of cardboard in front of your radiator and stop the airflow that cools your engine coolant. THIS WILL CAUSE YOUR CAR TO HEAT UP AND CAN CAUSE ENGINE DAMAGE IF IT OVERHEATS. Don't completely cover the radiator but if your heater warms up when you put the cardboard in front of radiator it's a good sign that your thermostat is stuck open and needs to be replaced.
