2001, Subaru Forester 5 speed, recently started whining, semi loud wehn pressing the clutch in. Sound is not there in neutral, foot off clutch, or in gear.
SOURCE: clutch (I think) whines when in neutral & clutch engaged
it sounds like the thrust bearing in worn with no load you can hear the wear or play in the bearing

Imput shaft bearing. It just happened to me. You're looking at a $400 fix.
SOURCE: whining noise when engaging 1st or reverse.
i had a nissan pickup that would whine in all gears except 4th...it started out with 1st then reverse then went to the rest...solution was new transmission...or rebuild cause the syncronizers or the gears them selves are being chewed up...the new transmission was cheaper then a rebuild. or take it to somewhere that will do free diag on the transmission.

It could be the alternator, AC compressor, power steering pump or serpentine belt ilder tensioner pulley. Mostly we have been finding alternators whining. Compressors and water pumps usually grind or growl.
if the noise only happens when the car is moving it might actually be a bit of gear whine. if it makes the noise all the time it could probably be belt noise.
Thanks. Keep updated for any more query. You can rate this
solution and show your appreciation.
You'll need someone reving it slightly, to make the noise appear, while you localize it. Once localized, cost can then be estimated.
