Question about 2001 Saturn SL

2001 saturn sl1 not starting on first crank...

She used to start on first crank of key, now I have to crank then let off and starts on second crank. Today however, she didn't want to start even on second crank, although I did get started, she backfired. Almost acted like old time carb that was running out of gas. Could bad egr valve cause this type of problem?

Take off air breather tube,you should see a cone shaped part, on top and at back of engine right by the gas pedal cable. Remove the 2 10mm bolts, and it should come right off.

SOURCE: how do you change an egr valve on a saturn sl1

Quite easily take off the air breather tube then there is a cone shaped part with a connector on top at the back of the engine right by the accelerator cable 2 10mm bolts hold it on take off the 2 bolts and the valve comes off. If your still not sure you can buy a new EGR valve or if your going to just clean it to save you some money, you can use Carb cleaner which you can get at Auto Zone and they can give you the step by step instruction's free of charge to replacing the EGR valve  on you car with common tools. I will suggest that perhaps the blue smoke is not purely oil. It sounds like you may have an ignition problem where the engine has a hard time firing until warmed. The blue smoke may be, at least in part, unspent fuel. I realize that a warm engine that uses oil will smoke blue, but excessively rich conditions on startup can result in a similar effect. If the choke circuit is delivering a little extra fuel from a dirty injector, the problem may be worse when starting from cold.
To remedy this, I would suggest a simple replacement of plugs and wires, as well as a fuel injector cleaner through the tank. I would bet money that these simple maintenance points would solve your problem.

My 2001 Saturn sl1 will not start or stay running won't idle. I changed plugs wires checked fuel pressure and tps only thing left I can think of is map sensor. Any suggestions are welcome plz.

Have you removed and checked the IAC? (Idle air control)
Will it stay running when you manually hold the throttle? keeping the idle up?

Saturn 2002 sl1 is having problem starting. The first time I turn on the ignitinion, it would just crank but would not completely start. However, the second time I turn the key, then it would start...

Very strange. It's possible something is not being powered the first time such as a relay, but its also possible the fuel pump relay is out and you are just cranking it long enough to build up oil pressure.
The fuel pump relay provides voltage to the pump when you turn on the key, then the pump gets voltage from the ECM once the oil pressure shows the engine is running.
You'll need to find out if you have no spark or no fuel pressure on the first attempt to start.

Hello: Try this procedure, Turn key on attempt to start engine leave key on, the security light should be blinking, wait 10 minutes. The security light should be off. Turn key off for 10 seconds, turn key back on (DO NOT ATTEMPT TO START) wait another 10 minutes. Turn key off for 10 seconds. Do the procedure again as in step 2. At the end of the third time turn key off then ten seconds later attempt to start the car. It should start.

Hello: The number one injector could be stuck open. to check you will have to remove fuel rail with injectors attached, energize fuel pump with key off and see if #1 injector drips/sprays fuel. YOU COULD ALSO SWAP #1 AND #2 injector and see if the misfire goes to #2 cylinder.

If it is an Automatic transmission, try putting it in Neutral and retry. Sometimes they don't always get into park all of the way, and you can only start an automatic car in park or neutral.

The starter on my 2001 SL1 was easy to get to, and remove. I would pull it and take it to a parts house to have it tested. It is possible the brushes are sticking.

have it scan it could be many things crank shaft sensor ignition coils and module. idle speed control. egr valve could be stuck open.
