The fuel pump is inside the gas tank.
Generally speaking, if the fuel pressure is low at idle its going to lack power on the road too. But its worth checking.

How do you change a water pump in a 2004 dodge intrepid?

Good luck with that. Take it to a capable mechanic with the right specialty tools. Its located inside the engine behind the timing chain. Its a mother to replace yourself. Takes about 8 hours labor. Will run about 750$ to replace. I say use a mechanic because it involves alot and anything can go wrong removing and replacing all those components.

95 lincoln cont. occassional crank fast ,but no start ,intermittent ,later will instantly start as should

I think what you have going on here is a failing electric fuel pump, this is what they do when they are worn out, it is a rotary pump and the rotor sticks due to worn bearings. To confirm this get a can of spray starting fluid from any auto parts store, next time it won't start spray it into the air intake hose to the engine, if it fires right up you have a bad pump. The fuel pump is located inside the fuel tank, remember to also replace the fuel filter when the pump is replaced. Also check the connector to the fuel pump cutoff safety switch for signs of melting, replace the switch and connector as needed, this is caused by a defective fuel pump drawing excessive current.

My dodge intrepid 1999 3.2l shuts off while driving on highway and regular driving. only happens once in a while. I was thinking about changing the fuel pump, but i wasn't sure if I could buy the fuel pump...

I had a similar problem but with entirely different roots. The OEM batter leaked (so much for dealer saying they'd "check the battery" at each oil change). It corroded the positive battery cable. It was replaced by the dealer, spliced in. 2 years later, my car briefly just shut off/turned on again. After much troubleshooting effort, checking fuses, ignition switch, starter relay, I found the splice of the replacement +ve battery cable to be loose. I replaced it again myself, taking the opportunity to replace the battery.

Another key electrical fix for my 2000 'trep was to re-seat all the connectors in the engine compartment. They get dusty, dirty and make intermittent contact. This corrected an EGR valve problem, plus seem to make the car run more smoothly. It sounds odd, but the Intrepid is a fly-by-wire car...if electrical connections are dirty, it will eventually impact performance.

I'm sorry if that doesn't so it for you. While it's possibly a fuel-sending issue, I doubt the fuel pump would be the cause. PS The pump is located within the gas tank, requiring removal of the latter. Be very careful if you undertake this repair...it is hazardous. Never work on the fuel system with the battery connected or it automatically pumps fuel when the ignition is turned on.

That's about the best I can provide.

Starts cold when warm shuts off

May be the fuel pump, experienced similar problems in 1995 Intrepid. When the pump warmed up, it would start to loose pressure and car would sputter and die, but would start back up. If it started it would usually begin sputtering again and eventually die.

tell you where i would start first it sounds as though you have more then one problem ak first check your map senser, fuel filter & also look around the wiring harness focos on any area where there is movement it really sounds as though you have an electrical problem also check the harness where it goes through the fire wall (shake the harness while watching your lights see if they flicker) if this doesnt help narrow it please contact me via E-MAIL and i will see if i can help you farther.royhyreno9@yahoo.com

fuel pump more than likely, take it to a shop to be sure, or if you are handy check your fuel pressure with a fuel pressure gauge.

I bet if you let the car cool off after a few hours it will start up again. You could also try banging on the fuel tank with a block of wood. If that makes the car start you have a faulty fuel pump.

There are other causes it could be, but a fuel pump is most likely your culprit.

I could go into details and explain why fuel pumps fail this way... but I'm too lazy to type now..
