SOURCE: I have a 98 A4 AUDI and need to replace engine oil

Just about everyone thinks that engine and and hydraulic oil differ from brand to brand. There is very little difference from brand to brand. Look up or have your parts supplier look up what type you should use and then buy the cheapest buy.

No manufacturer is going to put **** out and have to pay out for whatever liability.

I have a lifter that is ticking

Hydraulic lifters can hang up or become sticky, so it depends on many factors, as in, is oil clean, how often you change oil, what type of oil, and what weight oil are you using. You can try an oil flush if you are not one who changes oil at proper intervals, this is usually why a hydraulic lifter fails.

Auto trans... when first starting engine in morning and put into reverse or drive a loud noise coming from front end under bonnet. no noise if in park or neutral. noise goes away after a few minutes and...

not completely sure it has something to do with the auto trans, but more likely the hydraulic lifters. the older cars used to have a fixed valve clearance with tappets, but now they use hydraulic lifters. the problem with these is if you don't change the oil at a regular interval or do alot of stop-start driving, the oil becomes sludgy and does not flow into the small tolerance holes in the lifters. the beautiful thing about oil is that it thins out as it gets hotter to a point, so as the engine warms up, the oil thins out and flows into the lifter hydraulically pumping them up and closing the gap, i would suggest to change the engine oil to manufacturer's specs and add a "lifter free" product, after a few weeks it will reduce dramatically

1996 Audi A4. On a very cold morning the power steering fluid overflows from the resevoir.

Check up the hydraulic power steering pump.
See picture below for 1.6, 1.8 liters Audi (4 cyl.) engines:

If you find leaks and noise when runing, the hydraulic vane type pump is damaged. The pump **** air inside and mix air with oil resulting foam. Therefore fluid volume inside steering instalation rises. Then pressure overflows oil from the reservoir. You need repair or replace hydraulic vane type steering pump.

Does 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee V8 have hydraulic lifters? I posted a question a few days ago regarding engine loud ticking which sounds like lifter noise. It doesn't have that deep sounding knock. I went to...

I would not believe any thing some parts store loser told you. Theres not a V8 built that doesnt have hydraulic lifters, unless its some fancy racin engine. It has hydraulic lifters, but unless you dont change your oil every 5k miles and/or use some cheap oil, there should be no problems. You should have a real mechanic look at it, and verify that you have good oil pressure. If it does, I would change the oil and use some MOBIL 1 and drive it, the oil will clean the lifters somewhat. If the eng has low oil pressure, that will need to be addressed.
