Hello. I am in the market for 4 new tires for my Discovery. I do not take the vehicle off-road but do need an all-terrain tire for winters. My Discovery does have a tendency to jump all over the road when traveling on uneven/pavement, so I would like a tire that would be the best. Money is not a concern. I just really want the very best tire.
My Discovery is a 2002 and I also need to purchase the devise to take off the hub nuts. I purchased one from our local Land Rover dealer but it did not fit. Any solutions? Thanks
Most everything automotive is a "trade-off" between absolute performance, wear rate, durability and ride. ie: solid engine mounts on an engine would last far longer and allow more "instant" horsepower to reach the driveline but would shake all the teeth out of your head. Same with tires. If you are looking for a tire that is quiet, rides well and lasts a long time, but still gives excellent grip in snow, the only one that crosses my mind is a tire made by NOKIA. What you are looking for is a tire with semi-agressive tread pattern, good cord count (more plies are better, but don't go overboard or they will ride very hard) Wear is controlled by the compound mix. There again, too hard of a compound rides harder and sometimes can result in sidewall cracking from flex. There are likely other tires out there which are similar or better than the nokias, but it will take some research to determine which is best for you. Additionally, it may take a bit of experimentation...some tires just seem to work better on certain vehicles than others (has a lot to do with actual weight distribution and suspension design of each individual car.)
Don't just buy the most expensive tire...I've seen many sub-brands outperform pirellis in different applications!
I'm not "the last word" on this, but if you ask ten people you are likely to get as many different answers! I have done tons of research though!!!
As for the hub nut tool, why not bring the incorrect one back to the dealer and tell them they got you the wrong one???
Good luck in your search!!
