Question about 2001 Mercury Sable
Typically when the alternator is no longer working the battery light will be displayed on the dash. There are occasions where this will not happen. The best way to check is to use a voltmeter. Start the vehicle and check voltage at the battery. You should see more than 13.8 volts and better yet more than 14 volts.
