Wipers come on when using turn signals

This is often a problem with this style of turn stalk. If you are skilled, there is a Web article about disassembling the stalk inside the vehicle. If not, you will need to remove the plastic steering column cover and then remove the stalk mechanism and buy a different one.

The wind shield wipers on my 1996 Mercury started acting up, gradually worsened and then, just quit working. What do you recommend?

There are 3 major parts to the wipers. The control stalk on the Turn signal, the Wiper motor, and the arm assembly called a transmission.

If the wipers acted up by turning on when you used the turn signal, by itself and the Wipers would turn on when you hit a bump, it is likely the Stalk. The Stalk is part of a multiposition switch which has everything in it. It is usually replaced as a unit after you remove the plastic cover from the steering column and the Ignition tumbler. The delay often fails in the wiper as this part goes bad.

The motor usually has problems in turning off when they go bad for a majority of the people. The motor may not start in a minority of the cases.

The wiper transmission will make noise when parts wear. If one side completely stops moving or if the wiper motor runs and the blades do not move, this is the part responsible.

The wipers do have a fuse. If it blew a fuse its time to replace parts. The Stalk is called a MFS, a multifunction switch. It usually is held on by female Torx bolts and requires you to remove the plastic cover on the steering wheel, sometimes the Key tumbler, and several wire connectors.

The motor has only a few screws holding it to the Firewall under the hood. However, it is sometimes difficult to remove with the engine in the way. You will also have to deal with the clip which holds the wiper Transmission on.

If you are handy it is a moderately involved job to do the stalk. You might want to price this job out at a Glass shop or Body shop.

Windshield wiper will not turn off unlessfuse removed/vehicle off

suspect a shortcircuit in the stalk switch.
1has moisture or rain got into the switch? see if problem goes after a few days
2. use WD40 or contact cleaner into the part of the switch where the cables connect to the stalk you may have to open up the steering column or possible with thin straw nozzle supplied with the can.

3. switch is defective and needs to be replaced.

My front and Read Windshield wipers are not working. Checked fuses, they are fine. 2003 Chevrolet Suburban

the switch / stalk on the dash may be the culprit especially if the same multifunction switch does both sets of wipers, or an earth wire may be broken to the switch which would kill both functions.

Check the plug connection to the stalk and try substituting another stalk from a breaker car and see if it works, then if so, you can set about removing the old switch and replacing it with the breaker one, but it only needs plugged into the harness plug inside the steering column cover to be tested.
