Sounds like the tumblers in the lock cylinder have jammed. Or there is an excessive amount of pressure on the steering wheel.
Have you tried another key ?

Testimonial: "it doesnt feel like there is any pressure on the steering wheel. it will move about 1/8th of an inch or so in both directions and then just stop suddenly. i do not have another key."

SOURCE: 95 suburban, ignition locks, can't turn key,

Remove the lower steering column cover and check to see if the rod from the ign. lock and tumbler to the ignition switch is binding up. If it's ok, you're problem may be the bearing under the steering wheel being broken.

MY ignition want turn forward or backward so i can get the lock pushed in to pull the tumbler out any solutions?

will try to assist you.are you parked on a hill? or parked somewhere as to out the transmission in a "bind"? try turning your key switch to the on position and at the same time you're attempting to turn the key to on,wiggle the steering wheel back and forth, like you're turning to left or right. sometimes the steering lock binds when the cars parked on a hill,or parked against a curb.try to turn the steering wheel to the left, while turning the key to "on" some times rocking the car back and forth will free up the locked steering column.while turning the key to the "start" position of course. try this and if this does'nt help you" please repost your question to fixya.com. thank you for seeking out fixya.com we look forward to assisting you in your future automotive,or household questions with appliances,or just about anything.there are experts ready to assist you 24/7

My ignition switch on my 2003 civic .is not working. i can put the key in but it wont turn forward or backwards. what should i do?

Have you tried to turn the steering wheel side-to-side, while turning the key?
The steering wheel may be very hard to turn, but moving it just a little may free-up the key
Sometimes parking against a curb, or turning off the car while the steering is turned all the way to one side, will cause the stering wheel lock to actually lock the key cylinder from turning.

2005 Kia amanti ignition key wont turn?

You may have a broken ignition tumbler, or is your steering wheel turned all the way to one side? If so, apply pressure on the steering wheel in the same direction that your tires are already turned, at the same time try turning your key forward. Your steering wheel lock may be denying you to turn your key. hope this helps

Key will not turn over on my saturn 2002 sl1

Have you tried turning the steering wheel while turning the key? I know you said it's locked, but they usually have a little play in them, sometimes when it's turned as far as the lock will let it the ignition will be put in a bind. If that doesn't help the only other option I can think of would be to replace the ignition set yourself, you'll get new keys and save yourself a trip to the dealer.
