I AM HAVING A PROBLEM SETTING THE HI AND LO CARB.JETS AFTER A NEW KIT. HAS BEEN INSTALLED.

Remove the old carb.  Bolt the new carb and gasket onto the manifold.  Hook up the fuel line and clamp.  Thread the throttle cable through the linkage and tighten.  Have someone hold the gas pedal to the floor, look inside the carb and make sure the throttle plate inside the carb is full open.  Next, wire in the electric choke, this should just clip on.
Now after the engine is running and warmed up...adjust the mixture and idle speed adjustments on the side of the carb.  Is this a two barreled cab and does it have a manual choke?

also check the float level, if not set to the right height float will cause too much gas to be sent to the bowl. you do this by bending the small tab on the back of the float. one way makes the float shut off sooner and the other makes it shut off fuel later. also check the fuel air mixture no small task on the mikuni carb.

Any auto parts store can get the kit for you. The carb should have a metal service tag attached to one of the screws on top or side. You'll need the numbers on this tag to get the correct carb kit. If no tag is found then look for numbers either stamped or cast into carb, probably on bowl or on top.

I have a wide band oxygen sensor i can put on any car.

and tune anything. (gas)

the jets need tuning.

here it the steps before

1: 100% clean every inch, (called "boiling out the carb") or kemdipped.

2: kitted, put in a carb kit, gaskets, and all the bits.

3: make sure choke works. turns off , on a hot engine, if not MPG WILL SUCK.

4: fuel pressure as spec. not 15psi,., better is 3.

5: float level to spec. (new carb)

6: tune it. (thats the long story.)

Stalls press throttle


1st question, is that both hot and cold engine.?
2nd/ does the engine get hot? reach 180F temps. and hold.?

i feel your pain, carbs are fussy things..
for sure if the engine is health and the distributor is timed
right and advances by the book , does it?
then its a bum carb.

the problem with is fixing a 27 year old car is probematic.
back when, we can just buy a rebuilt.
or buy a kit.
we'd clean the carb , then kit it and then retune it.
now the symptoms of a bad carb,
1: it's lean.
2: what causes. lean
a: float level too low. RTM read the manual look up level spec.
b: air leaks. any where in the intake tract.
c: clogged gummed up jets, for sure in any 27 yo carb.
d: clogged nozzels
e: air jet fell out and not is tool lean, (emulsion jets)

above is for a hot motor.
if motor actually gets hot.
if the car stalls cold.?
then the choke is bad.
how do you like my carb in a nutshell post.

check the carb main jets i just had that problem rebuilt the carb and fixed it. auto zone has rebuild kit for around 30 dollars easy to rebuild if you take a lot of pictures!! spray all the jets out with carb cleaner around 4 dollars

No fuel


It sounds like it used all the fuel in the carb bowl and then quit. So the bowl may not be refilling. There may be a clogged screen at the fuel inlet at the carb., or the needle valve just inside the carb. may be stuck closed and not letting fuel in. Or the float may be sticking on its pivot and keeping the needle valve closed. You may need a carburetor re-build kit. It will have a new needle valve and seat, new float, new gaskets, and just a few other parts that are changed when kit is installed- about $30 at a parts store for the minor re-build kit. Take the metal tag on top of the carb. with you to get the right kit for your carburetor. Good luck.

You have two setting screws on front of carb, You start off by adjusting all the way to the left, Then back off 3/4 turn to both setting screws, Then you have to set your air fuel mixture by just slowly turn your setting clock wise do so until vibration go away. My 1986 Dodge Ramcharger is having issues while in idle. While just waiting at a stop light or just having the car in idle period, the truck will begin to shake intensly and after 5-30 seconds will die...


Have you tried setting the idle in drive? If you try that, have a helper setting in there with their foot on the brake and parking brake set. I've seen many high mileage vehicles, that wouldn't idle correctly. Other than an engine overhaul, we would set the idle in drive. At least it wouldn't die every time you came to a stop sign or red light. Yeah, when you put it in park or neutral, the idle would go high, but, you don't drive it in park or neutral.
You can get a carb kit for the carb, see if it helps? The carb kit should have all the instructions you need to adjust settings. In the past every carb kit I used had plenty of instructions. I looked at rockauto.com, they had a carb kit for your vehicle. Find the model number on your carb and make sure it matches their carb number.
If your carb is a holley, you can check the holley web site. I haven't been there in a long time, I don't know if they would have instructions for your carb?

You need the carb number to get the exact setting but 13/32 should be enough to keep your truck running without any trouble. If you can smell gas a lot then cut it back to 11/32 and if you are having trouble with acceleration or cutting out, bump it up to 15/32. You can get the exact number from a build sheet from a carb kit with the carb number or by vehicle too. Hope this helps.

hello, usually when gas sets in carb for a long time it turns into a varnish, you will have to take carb apart and clean all jets out, even the fuel pump may be clogged up, you will probably have to rebuild carb, unless you have access to air line to blow any and all jets, pretty much all passage ways, power jets, in other words you have a carb problem, you may need a new one, unless you have a strong solvent, that will break away any varnish or gum up.

My truck is very tempermental about starting. My friend said it is because of the elderbrock carb. could that be true?


Could be. Edelbrock carbs (if its the one Im thinking of) are based off of the old Carter AFB carbs. The carb may have a set of jets and metering rods that dont match up with your motor. You should be able to buy a Strip kit for the carb consisting of numorous combinations of metering rods and jets. If your carefull you do not have to pull the carb to change jets and the metering rods are really easy to change. They are vacuum actuated and are located under a flat plate on either side of the carb by the flat surface where the air cleaner seats on the carb. You may also have a simple choke problem. What size is your motor. Did you purchase the carb to go with that motor or is this one you got second hand? If you got the carb second hand it could be the jetting or metering rods. If the starting problem is really the carb get a kit and start playing. You should be able to use the spark plugs as a factor of running rich or lean. Pull a plug and see if its black, white, light grey, or brown. If you have one of the generic shop manuals like Haynes, they have a spark plug condition chart in most of them.
Thats the best I can do in print without going into serious detail.
