Look for the earth connection on the radio, sometimes the Ariel is the radio chassis earth, sometimes it is a lead bolted to the car chassis from the radio. It could also be the condensor (this is another name for a capacitor) usually near the distributor or the spark plugs.

The problem can be on the radio itself. There surely are blown capacitors that's why the operation is unusual. I'm sorry but the only cure is to replace the radio itself since you did the first course of action.
