Look for the earth connection on the radio, sometimes the Ariel is the radio chassis earth, sometimes it is a lead bolted to the car chassis from the radio. It could also be the condensor (this is another name for a capacitor) usually near the distributor or the spark plugs.

Hi and welcome to FixYa!

The problem can be on the radio itself. There surely are blown capacitors that's why the operation is unusual. I'm sorry but the only cure is to replace the radio itself since you did the first course of action.

Hope this shed some light. Thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

Loud speaker static when the car is off. It drained that battery. I tried pulling the radio fuse but it was still making the noise. I had to disconnect the battery to get it to stop. Any ideas?

I GUESS that the speakers are driven by an after market amplifier. An amplifier needs to be connected to a power source that is only on when the radio is on, through a relay.

So I GUESS that:
  1. The wiring is incorrect. Or
  2. If is has a relay, the relay is stuck.

The fuse might be built into the cable to the lighterand/or radio. It's called "fusable link", this type of fuse looks like a cable. Or another type of fusable link might be in the fuse box under the hood near the firewall.

radio can get power from 2 sources.. the memory wire and the ignition wire(key-on)..if these are causing a dead battery after sitting for a bit..without much cost you can get a battery cut off switch that will cut all power to the car..only thing is.. all the memory in the car gets wiped out each time you shut it off. these are made for big rvs to keep the main starting battery isolated from the static batteries that run the rv equipment..

sound like faulty alternator voltage regulator. check alternator out put at battery with engine idling should be 13.5 - 14.5 volts at 2000 rpm if not lower you have faulty voltage regulator.also check alternator drive belt and check alternator for loose wires.besure turn off radio before disconnecting negative battery cable to keep from locking out radio losing code.

It sounds as if the antenna has become disconnected from the radio. You will have to pull the radio out of the dash and make sure the antenna is still connected there, then check and make sure it is still connected to at the fender well and in between.
