How to remove the steering column in a 1988 Chrysler LeBaron 2.5L with tilt steering

I have tilt steering and am trying to remove the steering column but cannot find any instructions or diagrams. There are no airbags, and I'm sure it's not that hard, I would just rather know what I'm getting into before I start.

SOURCE: How to put on Serpentine belt for 92 Chrysler Lebaron 3.o liter engine

Before replacing or installing the old belt you need to check all of the pulley's that the belt rides on for play. Pay special attention to the spring loaded tensioner pulley. They can sieze and cause the belt to come off.

I found this picture it is a bit large for the screen.

If it has been over 60K, this is likely your problem. You will need to remove the timing cover to confirm. If it is intact, look at cam sensor, crank sensor, and possibly fuel pump issue.

SOURCE: 1995 chrysler lebaron timing belt

The serpentine belt will automatically adjust its own tension and the A/C compressor drive belt should be tightened with the A/C drive belt tensioner until only 5 / 16 in. (8mm) deflection is apparent between the crankshaft pulley and the A/C compressor pulley.

Fig.: Timing belt routing and timing mark locations

  1. Place the camshaft sprocket on the end of the camshaft. Make sure the sprocket and camshaft grooves line up.
  2. Install the bolt and washer to the camshaft. Use the spanner tool to hold the sprocket from rotating while tightening the bolt to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
  3. Install the tensioner (if removed), and hook the upper end of the spring to the water pump pin and the lower end to the tensioner in exactly the same position as when removed. Turn the timing belt tensioner counterclockwise full travel in the adjustment slot and tighten the bolt to temporarily hold this position.
  4. If not already done, position both camshafts so the marks align with those on the alternator bracket (rear bank) and inner timing cover (front bank). Rotate the crankshaft so the timing mark aligns with the mark on the oil pump.
  5. Install the timing belt on the crankshaft sprocket and while keeping the belt tight on the tension side (front side), install the belt on the front (radiator side) camshaft sprocket.
  1. Install the belt under the water pump pulley, over the rear camshaft sprocket, then to the inside of the tensioner, keeping the belt taught the entire time. Any slack should be only in the section where the timing belt adjuster is located, if any slack is between any other two pulleys the timing belt will not function correctly.
  2. Rotate the front camshaft counterclockwise to tension the belt between the front camshaft and the crankshaft. If the timing marks came out of line, repeat the procedure. The timing marks must line up when the belt is fully tensioned.
  3. Install the crankshaft sprocket flange.
  4. Loosen the tensioner bolt and allow the spring to tension the belt.
  5. Turn the crankshaft 2 full turns in the clockwise direction only until the timing marks are aligned again and tighten the tensioner lock bolt to 19 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
Turn the crankshaft slowly and in the clockwise direction ONLY.
  1. Install the timing belt covers, the engine bracket, the insulator, the crankshaft pulleys, accessories and accessory drive belts.
  2. Install the rocker arm cover if removed to find top dead center for the No. 1 cylinder.
  3. Connect the negative battery cable and road test the vehicle.

Hope helps.

1988 sahara tilt steering wheel is very slopy and getting worse every time I drive it?

It wont get better either and in fact could start breaking stuff inside the steering column if it doesn't get fixed. Inside the steering column there are some bolts that hold the tilt parts together. These loose bolts or nuts need tightened up with some locktite. Trying to get to them is a pain and can require some special tools. This is one of those items where it is easier to take it to a mechanic that already has the tools. Said mechanic could probably do the job in less then an hour.

I have a 1988 f-350 diesel and i have lost my key and bought it without a spare how do i remove the ingnition with out a key

You don't without ruining it. I suggest you get a locksmith to make you a new key they can get in there somehow and make a key. In 1988 did Ford use a seperate key for doors? If the doors are the same or the glove box those locks are easier to remove. Also, I've never tried this with a Ford but on newer GM cars if you take the title to a dealer they can make a key from the (VIN) serial number. But, you have to have the title to prove ownership of the vehicle. I don't know if they can do that on an 88 or not. Good luck.
