anyone is going to need far more information, like what tranny is in it what motor is in it, what happened the last time it worked, have you checked your transmission fluid with the engine running and at operating temperature?, (YES IT MATTERS IF ITS RUNNING OR NOT AND YES TEMP MATTERS)
check fluids for contanination..(small aluminum shavings and debris in the fluid)sounds like a filter and fluid change are to be done(cheaper first) then if problem still exist look at shifter linkages and cable for operation.if still time for overhaul/replacement if car is worth it..good luck
It could be a number of different issues, it would help to start by checking the fluid level and making sure it is not low. Is your check engine light on?

With the engine running are you getting any voltage off the alternator? check with a multimeter. Check voltage at battery while running should be 13 volts or more.
