The negative cable would connect to the battery and to the engine or frame. You should have removed a bolt so there should be a threaded hole where that bolt goes. Its usually on the engine or transmission.

Car battery is dead. I have a Black and Decker Simple Start car battery recharger. I can figure out how to plug the outlet part into the wall but I do not know what to do about the part that goes onto...

You should have 2 wires with clips = one red that you clip on the Positive [ + ] post of the battery, this may be marked red on the cable. The other black clips to the Negitive [ - ] post of the battery.
Don't plug in the charger untill you clip the wires to the battery, make sure the charger is set to 12 volts. If your cherger has a cigar lighter wire just plug it in to the dash port.

My 96 cabrio if I don't unhook the battery when parked drains.

This could be caused by several different things. You could have a under the hood or light or an in the trunk light staying on. There are a few ways to check this. One is to get a test light which is a light with a aligator clip on one end of a wire and the test light with a metal pointing end on the other. This can be picked up at any auto parts store, Walmart, Kmart, Sears.
1st Disconect the negitive battery cable, clip one end to the battery and secure the other end to the cable you just took off. Your light should be mounted between your battery and the cable you removed. If your car is drawing current the light will be on and if you have a hood light it will be on because your hood should be open. To check these lights remove the bulbs from the trunk and hood one at a trime if the test light goes out one of these is the problem. If the test light remains lit remove the fuses 1 at a time until the test light goes out. When the light goes out see what that fuse goes to and that is your problem. If the light still does not go out at this point, you probably have a bad diode in your alternator. If this is the case you will need to remove the alternator and have it tested. You should be able to do this at any auto parts store. If your alternator is bad you will need to replace it. Below is a picture of a test light.

get a12 volt test light remove negitive cable from battery attach clip on test light to negitive cable removed from battery. touch other end of test light to negitive side of battery if light is on something in car is pulling power if light is off everything is turned off you can test this if light is off by turning on the headlights the test light should stay lit until you turn off headlight switch. If light is on when fistr connecting to battery turn every thing off in car or disconnect anything includeing trunk or under hood lights one at a time until test light is no longer lit. if this is not the problem load test battery.

How to switch out the battery

Remove Negative terminal first, then positive terminal. Battery will have some type of tie down or block at base with a bolt you will have to remove. Remember how it goes back together. Remove battery.
Install new battery and tie down or block. Install Positive terminal then Negative terminal.
Remember to never touch both Positive and negative terminals with a metal object (ie..ratchet, wrench etc) this can cause injury and/or permanent damage to a new battery.

Remove alternator on 99 sunfire

Disconnect the negative"-" battery cable from the battery. Remove two mounting screws before disconnecting the wires, this will allow easier access to the wiring. Spray a fair amount of penetrating oil on all the wiring terminals and let them soak for about ten minutes. Remove the wires and make a small diagram in order to remember their placement upon reinstallation. That's it, reverse the removal instructions for installation Thank you, Dana P.S. It may be necessary to remove the sarter from the top end of the engine due to interference from exhaust or steering linkages, but normally they will come out from the bottom. Thank you, Dana

Why woun't my 1996 Ford Thunderbird start?

sounds like a voltage draw some where in the cars electrical system. one way to tell is with a 12volt test light. remove the negitive battery cable from the battery , hook one end to the negitive of the battery and the other to the disconnected negitive cable end. if the car is ok it should have no bright test light lite up. open one car door it should get bright . if there is a lite test light, start disconnecting the fuse circuits one by one untill the light goes out.find the fuse that puts out the light and you have found the circuit that is drawing excessive voltage.than its just a mater of finding out whats on the circuit and you can find the problem,
