Question about Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee v6 dies at stops/red lights and sometimes at speed, also after stoping at the store or somthing it doesnt want to start. It has spark, turns over it just wont fire. But using starting fluid it will start everytime. Ive checked the fuel pressure extensivly and it was always good. After researching i thought cranksensor but ive never heard of anyone being able to start with starting fluid. And usualy when driving the rmps sometimes drop and then it cuts off at the next stop. Please help.

Any chance the check engine light is on ?
You are correct in thinking the starting fluid would point to a lack of fuel, but its also possible the engine would start without it once something cools off a bit. Even a wiring harness problem could come and go.
If the idle air control valve failed, it would stall at stops but should start if you push on the gas pedal to open the throttle.
What happens if you shift to neutral when coming to a stop ?
It really sounds like an electrical component getting hot and failing, then coming back to life once it cools off.

There is no engine light on. When the problem first started i tried stopping in neutral but it still cut off.

Thats going to be tough to figure out. If you can't duplicate the problem in the garage, you would have to check components on the road when it happens. Using starting fluid points to a lack of fuel, but normally the fuel pump or injectors would not come back to life right away. You listed it as a V6 but its actually a 4.0 engine, right ?

Unless by the time you get out and use the starting fluid, the relay or component would have come back to life anyway even if you did not use the starting fluid. If an O2 sensor was going bad, or most any other sensor, you should have a check engine light and a trouble code for it.

SOURCE: 1995 jeep grand cherokee wont start

it most definately is the crank shaft sensor. same exact prob i had. it costs about 60 bucks and 3 minutes to replace yourself. one bolt holds it into the transmission bell housing and one connector wire. very simple fix. call off the wrecker. just have plenty of ratchet extensions available i had to go in from behind the transfer case to reach the bolt but it was still pretty simple to install.

1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee. When I stop at a light engine revs up and feels like it is trying to push the car. Then the car dies.It will start back and run fine after that.

Could be a sticking idle air control valve, or dirty throttle body.
The computer uses the valve to control idle speed by regulating the amount of air into the intake.

My 1996 jeep grand cherokee doesnt start half the time

Sounds like a poor connection somewhere...Best time to check is when it's in no-start condition...When running, obviously whatever isn't working is (temporarily). Once you identify the system (fuel, spark etc) that's not working, check all wires and connectors for good contact and continuity.
