It depends on what timing you are wanting to set. If you are talking about cam timing, there is major engine tear-down involved. If you are talking about ignition timing, there are no adjustments available for this.

It depends on the year. With newer models that don't have a distributor, you don't set timing. It is set by the cam position sensor, and the ignition module. older models with a distributor require a timing light and you use the flash from #1 firing in order to illuminate the timing marks on the crankshaft pulley.

I just replaced the distributor in my 1992 buick estate wagon and now the timing is off. How do I set it?

if the timing is close and not running rough you will need a timing light to set the timing.the timing spec should be on a decal on the upper rad support.i think its 6-8 degrees before top dead center.the motor should be at operating temp and with the timing light hooked up to the battery and #1 cylinder.point the light at the timing marks and adjust the timing to spec.when the timing is set tighten distributor hold down bolt and recheck timing to make sure tightening the bolt hasn`t changed the timing.

I am looking for a wiring dagram for a 1991 Z71 - k1500 1/2 ton 5.7 ltr. 4wd? I have been all over the web trying to find a reference guide or anything that I can pull up for free, and will not navigate...

It's not free but $24 will get you the original GM dealer wiring book at I have used them before and had excellent service. Hope this helps.

Cant get timing belt on

The mechanic should check on the timing mark . sir you have to look at the timing mark to set the timing chain .there is a timing mark in the pulley where you will place the timing chain.and then there also is a timing mark in the place where you place the pulley set it both align with each other then after it then place the belt.then it is set.

I know just enough about car mechanics to be dangerous. I replaced the water pump and put the timing belt back on just the way it came off and it must have slippied a tooth. I need to know how to reset all...

TDC can be found by re-installing the cover and referencing the "0" mark on the timing scale with the hash mark on the pulley. If there isn't one, your other option is to make a reference mark on the pulley and a reference mark in the same place on a fixed immovable part of the block with the #1 piston near the top of it's bore. Place a long bolt of the exact thread size as the sparkplug into the plug hole, 'till it touches the piston, then back it off a few turns. Then turn the engine by hand in one direction, till it stops. Make a mark at the block reference position on the pulley. Then again by hand, turn backwards till it agian stops. Make another mark. Exactly half way between the two marks you made on the pulley is absolute TDC.Turn the crank so that the halfway mark on the pulley is aligned with your block reference. The very first mark you made on the pulley is just so you can return to that position if necessary. Once TDC has been established Do not turn the engine at all. Don't forget to remove bolt in plug hole. Use your manual to find correct index mark for camshaft gear(s) and any other pulleys.
Not sure what is meant by "holes aligning" on tensioner. Once "free" retainer holes cant remain aligned. Most important is that the tensioner is firmly against the belt and doing it's job. I always turn the engine twice, sometimes four times, back to tdc and re-check cam position.and to verify that valves are not hitting pistons. (turn by hand only with no plugs in the engine) After position is verified as correct, put it together.
