My 2002 Kia optima makes a screeching sound when u start it up. Lasts for 30 seconds then stops. Now its doing it when I start moving. Had a new alternator and belt replaced a few months ago. Replaced the power steering hose 1 month ago for a leak tried belt dressing but nothing has worked. What could be the problem. My mechanic said maybe a bearing in the alternator. Any ideas.

Probably one of the other belts. A bearing wouldn't just screech for 30 seconds. Could also be the power steering pump low on fluid.

SOURCE: power steering problem, noise coming from engine, 97 montero

Your experiencing the same thing my 02 is experiencing- your crankshaft pulley is slipping on the crankshaft. It only does it under load, i.e. turning steering wheel(loads the power steering pump) running heater blower on high with headlights on (loading the alternator) or running the a/c with blower (loading the a/c compressor and alternator). Turning off all lights, blowers, ac, etc and allowing the car to idle should kill the slipping until loaded again. This problem is very serious and very expensive if your don't catch it early. It require repairs ranging from tightening the crank to pulley bolt, to replacing the pulley AND your crankshaft if it is allowed to continue. if you cannot get it serviced immediately then do your best to keep loads off of your belts by driving with the blower off, A/C off, and lights used only when necessary. Also try to avoid extreme tight turns which load your power steering pump. Your repair, if not done asap, will cost you upwards of around $3k since the motor must be removed and completely torn down to replace your crankshaft and pulley. I would seek a tech who will exhaust every other method- i.e. sleeving, welding, etc. to effect a repair. Just don't put it off because it will only get worse...

2002 Kia Optima 2.4 engine. What is the part called that has the wires from the spark plugs going into it? And can someone tell me where to find a diagram of the correct order?

Question edited a bit more clarity.
Question moved to model category.

When you replaced the starter, did you disconnect the battery? If you did, it is the security system and engine immobilizer that is stopping the car from starting. It needs resetting. Not so easy in a Kia!

https://autoily.com/how-do-i-reset-kia-alarm/

The Throttle Position Sensor is nothing to do with the Starter.

The item with the wires you refer to, is normally called the coil pack, but yours has the coil on top of the spark plugs.

https://www.google.com/search?q=2002+kia+optima+2.4+coil+packs

So what it has is a modern type distributor that is 'distributorLESS'.

2.4L Engine Firing Order: 1-3-4-2 Distributorless ignition system.

Hope all that helps you.

Have the computer scanned . I think u may find one of the emissions codes in there, make sure your air filter is sealed properly, ck for vacuum leaks. Before u start looking at electronics, May be MAF sensor, bad plugs ,cam sensor, coil pack, coolant sensor etc. Start w the basics,

I have a screeching noise when I start my 2001 kia optima. My belt that I see is tight and I see no leaks of oil getting on it. I have checked the power steering fluid.

Hi Julie,

If your belt only "screeches" when you first start your engine, the problem is most likely to be related to either your alternator or your air conditioner. Sometimes the bearings in these things start getting worn and cause excess resistance to rotation and will cause a screaching noise that goes away once they are moving. This usually also causes "glazing" on the belt.

Look at the ribbed side of the belt. If it looks "shiny" rather than just a dull black, this is glazing. It may not be necessary at this time to replace anything like the alternator or the air conditioning compressor, but I would recommend replacing a glazed belt and do a THOROUGH check of your pully assemblies while you have the belt off.
Spin all of the pullies (including the tensioner and idler pullies) by hand with the belt off. You should not be able to "hear" them spinning. Any pully or component that feels rough or has a rough or rattling sound when you spin it by hand should probably be replaced.

2002 kia optima,,, whining noise that stops when turning left

power steering pump probably went out.. if you can easily get at the belt and are any kind of mechanically inclined, remove the drive belt to the p/s pump and then start the car if the noise is gone then its probably part of the power steering pump

2002 kia optima /windshied wipers do not operate

The relay (fuse type thing located under the hood) was good as well. If that is the case then the motor is the issue. or the switch itself.
