The steering column shaft mounts to the rack and pinion steering gear with a type of u-joint and a pinch bolt to hold the steering column shaft tight on the rack and pinion stub shaft. This coupling may have gotten loosened, so you should check it. It is all hidden by the boot over the steering column on the floor. If you can get the boot to slide upward a bit, I think you can see the coupling. Or, you may need to look at it from underneath. The rack's stub shaft is on top of rack right where the steering column would come from the floor.
Here's an idea: put the front up on jack stands or blocks. Then you could watch and listen while someone turns the steering wheel back and forth.

SOURCE: how to change motor mounts on a 1996 nissan altima gxe

I would ask you why you want to change the mounts? They usually are not a problem unless the car was in a crash. Can you see that they are broken? If it is just engine shaking due to rough idle then the motor mounts will not solve this. You will need to find out what is causing the misfire to smooth it out.

I have a 1994 explorer that did the same thing and what I had to do is change the radius arm bushings as well as ball joints and tie rod ends - this seemed to fix it, however yours may be a little different but that is where I would start

Lower you can do fairly easy. Upper, a bit tougher. For the upper you will need a spring compressor.

What noise? And year and make of car?
A clicking noise on turns is a worn CV joint on the axle shafts. A grinding noise at one of the wheels could be a wheel bearing. Worn brake pads may cause squealing, screeching other high pitched noise.

Clinking noise when a bump is hit or turning corner.Suspect suspension, but don't know were to start.

i would start by checking the wheel barrings on the side of clicking located just behind the brake assembly

1 remove the tire ( on side of clicking )
2 remove the brake assembly ( remembering how it all goes back together )
3 remove the rotor

you should see the wheel pins that hold on your tire give that a turn and have a listen for
grinding, clicking, squeeking, or any other abnormal noises

you can at the same time check your balljoints located on the upper and lower part of the control arm
look for busted/broken boots and or some play by moving your control arm up and down and side to side

There is a squeek in the front end, Just put new brakes in but it still squeeks. Could this be a CV joint or a Bearing? The noise is present with or without the brake s applied. There is no vibration and...

worn CV joints "click," but only upon turning.
worn bearings "grind," with a faint metal-on-metal sound.
So, squeaking in the front end is unlikely to be a CV joint or a bearing.
Squeak could be almost any front suspension component, but here's the reason to stop
guessing what it is and jack up the car, remove the two front tires and inspect the
front suspension: it could be a bolt/nut
that is loosening - and by catching it, and tightening it, you could save yourself the cost of
replacing the missing hardware. Also, be aware that an inspecting mechanic (if your state or
county requires a safety inspection (like Pennsylvania)) will inspect all components of your car's
front suspension as a routine component of your car's safety inspection.
Also:

1-----Inspect----- Coil Spring----- Broken or Weak Coil Springs.
2-----Inspect----- Sway Bar Bushing----- Worn, Damaged, or Faulty Stabilizer Bar Bushings.
3-----Inspect----- Steering Stabilizer Bracket----- Loose or Broken Steering Stabilizer Bracket.
4-----Inspect-----lower ball joints-----Loose bolt/rubber bushing to lower control arm.
5-----Inspect-----Upper Ball Joints-----Loose bolt/missing rubber bushing.
6-----Inspect-----Connecting Rods-----(these are the rods that connect the lower control arm to the
front of the frame) Check for loose nut (on the frame side), or loose bolts (on the control arm side).

2 POSSIBLE PROBLEMS, STEERING SHAFT WEAR. MORE IMPORTANT SAFETY WISE IS THE LOWER CONTROL ARM BUSHINGS. EASY FOR A MECHAINC TO SEE AND SHOULD CHECK ON A LIFT FOR A MINIMAL CHARGE.

Front end squeeking

It's normally ball joints that make the squeaking noise. You can put grease in them with a needle. Then take silicone and put over the needle hole. You can go to Napa and get an alimite needle and put grease into the rubber boots on the upper and lower ball joints. Hope this helps. Phil
