Oh no,
Are you replacing VVT and chain? You need 2 special tools for this.. 1 to hold the camshaft where the slot is for the high pressure fuel pump, and another beside the crank damper on the rear of the motor, there is a small 10mm bolt that you remove and install a "holder" of sorts that holds the crank at TDC.
If you fail to do both of these steps before removing the chain you run the risk of throwing the timing out. Part numbers are as follows for the SST's.
Camshaft: (picture 1) SST 303-1061 (49 UN30 310610)
Crankshaft: (picture 2) SST 303-507

The PCM control ignition timing. you need have vechicle code scan best choice see if PCM not faulty or timing chain worn.

I believe he is asking about Physical timing... If not for ignition timing first inspect your CMP & CKP sensors, timing chain & VVT then lastly PCM.

Are there different types of these tools? The tool that I bought is flat all the way around which will not let me turn the cam 180 degrees. The slots in the cams are offset. The pic of the tool that you sent me looks like it is offset which would allow me to turn the cam 180 degrees. I'm going to check part numbers.

No sir there is only 1, you do not want to turn the cam 180 degrees unless your that far out of timing. If your are perfectly timing the slots will line up properly. This tool goes on the BACK of the camshaft closest to the transmission. There is a slot where they fit in... exhaust on the camshaft & intake on the slot where the high pressure fuel pump goes on.

Basic steps to replacing chain on Cx7 Turbo... set to TDC, remove valve cover, Lock the crankshaft with SST 303-507, untension timing chain via access hole on cover, remove crank pulley (do NOT remove before installing SST), remove front cover, remove high pressure fuel pump, Install SST 303-1061 on back of camshafts, Remove chain.... go in reverse order of that just leave SST 303-1061 in place until front cover, and crank pulley are on.

The starter is found in between the transmission and the block. If I recall my Mazda's correctly it is located on the side near the firewall. It is mostly cylindrical with wires coming from it.

2003 mazda heater core removal help

if you are mechanically enclined to due to budget going to do this yourself, the best advice anyone will ever give you is to pick up and hayes or chilton manual from your local autoparts store. they are less than 20 dollars and a mechanic will refer to these as the bible for your vehicle. they basically break down each car and make an easy to follow repair manual for the everyday person to go by.
