Valve tap cause

Most engines now use hydraulic lifters and they can leak a little, this causes space between then lifter and the push rod. This results in a tapping noise that goes away when they get warm or fill back up.

How do I stop rattly tappet noise?

Rick you don't say what vehicle it is. I don't believe mixing oils will affect tappet noise unless one of the two oils was way too thin a grade.

If all else is OK, rattly tappets aren't generally a big worry unless you also get hard starting, which indicates the valve timing is way off. I've had vehicles in which valve noise was factory standard LOL.

You could try an oil change with one grade heavier.

The rattle might also indicate that the upper cylinder head is being starved of oil, either due to low pressure, or sludging. You could get oil pressure measured to eliminate that possibility.

After all else if you want to go further you could get the valve lash adjusted, but in some motors it is a helluva job, and in a van, it is more difficult.

Ford explorer making whistling noise at air filter

a whistling noise, in itself, IS the vacuum leak, the leak is in between the filter and intake. because when you put in a filter, it causes air resistance and the air is pulling in from a small area (causing a whistling) ONLY use carb cleaner to check for leaks.

Starting fluid may cause internal detonation that may damage the engine.
(small to medium amounts) of water would cause hydrolock causing major damage.

OVERDRIVE LIGHT FLASHING ON A 97 FORD EXPLORER,SOUNDS LIKE NOISE COMING FROM TORQUE CONVERTER ALSO.

Light flashing means a code is stored in the transmission computer.A stored code can cause high line pressure which could cause some pump noise, but most ;likely the torque converter is starting to break up.The codes will tell the story.Good luck.

Lifter tapping

The tappet noise usually will get louder and louder as it wears. A totally collapsed lifter will definitely be noticeable by loss of power to that cylinder, misfiring, and excessive noise. But then again your current lifter noise could be possibly maintained for years to come by regular and consistent oil changes.

My oil pressure gage is in the red and doesnt move but i have lots of oil in it and i havent lost any it is a 96 explorer xl

Is the low oil pressure light on?
If the tappets are not noisey and the motor is not making any abnormal 'rattly' noises you may only have a faulty oil gauge pressure sender.
Replace the pressure sender, and if there is any remaining doubt get the oil pressure checked with an independant gauge before driving vehicle further.

Tappet rattle

Tapping noise is normal if engine is started but should dissapear after a few minutes when oil is dispesred at top.
Could be a lot of things without actually inspecting the engine. Had similar problems on a Ford. The hydraulic lifters packed up and could not compress or release. This forces the cam to work twice as hard. Had to remove and clean lifters 3 times. Possible cause dirt in oil or sludgy oil. Need urgent attention or be prepared to overhaul top. Other cause is too little oil at top. Check oil pump and oil pressure. Again dirty oil will enhance this problem.
