Depending on what year the truck was made, the circuit could be on the cig lighter fuse.

Does my 1985 el camino have to have check engine light

In regions where smog checks are required to register your vehicle, YES. In regions where smog checks are not required, you should fix the CHECK ENGINE light anyway, as it is an important warning of engine issues.

Engine Check light

Take it to autozone or another place like it and have them read the codes and tell us what they are.

My 1999 ford f250 7.3 diesel is due for a smog this month and my service engine soon light stays on. I have 2 codes come up, P0603 and P0470, I'm assuming thats why the light is on. What can I do to fix...

This is what I found out for your two codes;

P0603 is a KAM error where the PCM is forgetting everything it has learned about its driving strategy. This is normally a result of using a programmer or having used a programmer in the past. This one can be overlooked for now.

P0470 means you have a exhaust back pressure sensor concern.

Basically, you will have to inspect, test and maybe replace that back pressure sensor.

Prerunner wont pass smog due to engine service light

Not positive on this so consider only. The o2 sensor is what actually tells everything else what is going on with emmission and everything else adjusts to what info it relays. The o2 is also subjected to extreme temps and cooling cycles. So, instead of spending money on no answer diagnostism give replacement of o3 sensor so consideratio. If you choose to replace, wd40 and let exhaust cool down. Good Luck.

Prerunner wont pass smog due to engine service light

Try this:-
Theres a vaccum pipe tht fits on the brakes booster just under the mastercylinder probabely it may have popped out or the sensor could be faulty ....worth a try ;)

1976 Ford F250 Emmisions

Whatever it had when it was sold in OR is what will be required in calif, it goes by engine calibration number, that is on a sticker on the valve cover, another way to get it is to run the VIN number on a Ford information computer, we call this the OASIS SYSTEM. Also check the emission sticker on the radiaor support under the hood.
