Question about Mercury Mountaineer

1 Answer

Transmission OD light started flashing and check transmission light came on while driving. Shifted violently a couple of times but was able to drive it very slowly less than a mile to my home. Got it home and noticed fluid was dripping underneath the vehicle. Fluid looked pretty clear and no smell. It was not water condensation from the air conditioner because I was not running the air plus it was more fluid than you would typically see with water condensation. What could this be?

I was told that my mountaineer has a sealed transmission so you cannot check the fluid level. I'm thinking that it is indeed transmission fluid because the problem occurred at the same time that the fluid was noticed. I don't think that is a coincidence.

Yes, I agree. Have it checked out right away. I've never understood why manufacturers don't have a way to check the fluid. It is dangerous-and crazy.

There are no sealed transmissions & there is a way to check fluid on all automatics

  • Anonymous Jul 24, 2013

You can find out anything you want to know using Google ot You Tube Video That said a person with no vehicle experience ability to raise & support a vehicle can do much at home The fluid gets blown in from a container on some ford & is checked by removing the 3/16 set screw in the center of the drain plug on some units

Are you sure it wasn't transmission fluid? That would explain the warning lights-low fluid.

Testimonial: "The Ford dealer told me that there was no 3rd gear and they want 4,427 to replace the transmission! That is all that was said. I asked about the fluid and the service adviser said "maybe a band broke and that caused all the fluid to leak out." I wasn't satisfied with that answer so I'm having the vehicle towed to a transmission shop that is highly recommended. I just want a second opinion. It may not be worth fixing! When I told the service adviser I was having it towed somewhere else she asked "are they going to overhaul it?" I told her no, they are just diagnosing it. She didn't say anything after that. She seemed a little nervous."

SOURCE: Transmission stopped working and a big puddle of tranny fluid

Is it a Auto or a Manual if auto then check the breather pipe on the side of the box and you might find its the problem But its no good just filling it up as there must be a reason why its blowing out oil as it must be either driven like a racing driver or the pressure in g/box is to high and that could be the forward pump slipping bands.
If Manual then a oil seal is most likely the problem
yes worty doing.. Have a goodday

The front pump seal is what is leaking, the torque converter is where the seal seals against. The engine,or transmission will have to be removed to replace the seal.

SOURCE: 2004 f150 transmission fault light

I have an '04 F150 and I had an OD problem that was the same as you are having now, I brought it to a deqaler they told me that I needed a new trans or a rebuilt trans, I disagreed with them becaus the truck shifted fine until the OD gears. I brought it to a transmission shop and they removed the valve body the found a broken clip that got wedged under the valve and would not allow it to open therefore rendering the OD useless and giving a flashing OD light. it cost me $403.00 to repair and have not had a problem with it since. I would call a ****** shop in the area I had my truck back the next day. hope this helps.

No Reverse and the fluid is dirty and smells funny.

Sounds like you blew out your reverse belt/gear in the transmission. Probably going to need a transmission rebuild/replacement.

CD4E OD does not downshift out of gear when decelerating, OD light is now flashing, and I can no longer move in forward gears.

The Engine and Automatic Transmission (not applicable to manual transmissions) in this vehicles drive train are fully electronically controlled by a computer called the PCM and TCM (Power Train Control Module, Transmission Control Module). When a problem like this or other drive-ability related problems occurs the computer stores a record of the problem (there are of course some exceptions to this, like the fuel pump, engine coolant temperature sensor and MAF sensor for instance) in the form of a fault code in its memory, to read these fault codes you must have the systems memory scanned with a special tool. Once the fault code(s) are read you then must perform the appropriate diagnostic testing to find and resolve the problem(s) DO NOT REPLACE ANY PARTS UNTIL A TRAINED TECHNICAIN HAS DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM TO AVOID SPENDING YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY ON PARTS THAT MAY NOT CORRECT THE PROBLEM. Also always check fuel pressure for correct spec for your make and engine type.

My 1995 nissan quest overdrive light comes on when i start it and it wont go in drive but will 2nd gear, sometime on can turn the van off and restart and it will go in drive and shift ok but it shifts...

Sounds like the sensor for first gear.
The transmission comes with a shift sensor for each shift: if 4 shift, 4 sensor (including reverse).
Have somebody check the sensors and the cpu for the tranny. They go hand to hand.

Sounds like the transmission got overheated. I would not worry if shutting it off and restarting got rid of the fault.

2002 Ford Ranger transmission slipping?

The longer you drive with that condition, the more damage you will cause. Park it until you can repair it.

Think of it as how long would you think it is okay to run your engine without oil? Zero.

We were driving down the freeway when the ODT light started flashing on our 2000 Ford Windstar. WE pulled over, and it was gushing transmission fluid. Well, we got more fluid, and added it, and the ODT...

I would have the vehicle scanned to find out why the od light was flashing. When the light flashes there will be a diagnostic code stored in the engine computer. It sounds like the transmission overheated for some reason and vented the fluid. By the time you added fluid the transmission and started driving the transmission cooled down and quit leaking.

OD off Light Flashing on my 1998 Ford Explorer XLT 4.0 V

The OD light is flashing to alert u to the fact that some kind of fault has occured in the transmission, the problem is in many cases a slipping condition, you need to have the trans control system tested for the trouble codes that are stored when this light flashes, this will let u know what the problem is and a direction to follow to repair it.
