I had a 1998 Dodge Ram that Overheated alot. I changed the Radiators and Thermostats a couple of times. I finally pulled the water pump and found the impellers had been eaten away by electrolysis. I am not saying this is your problem but it is worth a shot. You can check for electrolysis with a voltmeter put one probe on the negative battery terminal and the other in the coolant. You want a reading of less than 0.2 volts.

The thermostat is not the only possibility for this problem.The thermostat is one of the possibility for overheating.If thermostat is replaced, but still the overheating problem is not solved, then get the coolant level checked.If the coolant is low, the engine will overheat.If coolant is leaking a bit, the engine will overheat.Get the radiator cap checked.If its loose or worn out,m the pressure will get released and it will overheat. ----------- Other possibility can be air in system.after replacing, the thermostat, the air has to be bleeded. park the car on flat ground - take the cap off the radiator and let the car idle for a while and add coolant as needed till you burp out all the air in the system. Make sure the coolant system is full first. The gauge may go up to hot until you get all the air out. Leave the radiator cap off, start engine, keep adding fluid till the engine warms up and pushes fluid out, then put the cap on and drive till the engine is warm, then cool off, add more fluid, repeat, till it stays full. You will get bubbles in the overflow tank until all the air is out.--------- as you mentioned head gasket replaced.But still get heater core and head-gaskets checked.------------

Start by checking the coolant. As we already said coolant is what warms the heater core. So if the coolant is low, there may not be a sufficient amount of warmth to transfer heat to the air in the passenger compartment.Once the coolant is full, feel the heater hoses that go through the firewall. With the engine at normal operating temperature, BOTH of the heater hoses should be hot to the touch. If only one is hot, this indicates there is is a blockage in the heater core or there is air trapped in the heater core.One hose hot, one cold, points to a plugged heater core.If this is the case,try flushing the heater core.There are no valves in the heater core; it is free flow at all times.Also check the head gasket. just because there is no water coming out of the exhaust dos,nt mean the head gasket is ok.How much pressure is in the system?.Are the water hoses very hard when the engine is hot?.......air in the system will stop the heater from working.------------Also try this procedure to clean the block in the heater core.If there is any:--- Put in a cleaner, Prestone, and drive car few hours.Then check if nNo success. Then get cleaner made by Gunk.You can get it from any local auto part store. Drain heater core, leave both heater hoses attached to the heater. Remove other ends of both hoses from the tubes on the thermostat housing and raise these ends above the heater core. Pour Gunk cleaner in one hose and add water until cleaner started to come out other hose. Leave this sit 4 hours and back flush heater core in both directions. Next back-flush block and radiator in both directions. Water should come out of tube on the thermostat housing that has a hose attached to the outlet of the heater core.If not coming then Flush water directly into this tube about 15 to 20 times and you will hear a thud of water coming out. Back flush block and radiator again and this time water should out the tube previously blocked. But if problem is same and no difference.Then is faulty heater core.Its causing the problem and it needs to be replaced.Also check the radiator,if its blocked then get the radiator back flushed too..------------ This should help.Thanks.Helpmech.

there is a metal tube that is your upper redaitor hose that runs between the cylinders under the intake manifold that have a thin rubber band gasket on each side . they are common to go bad.12_19_2012_12_50_25_am.png

Overheating while blowing cold air


You CAN NOT use ANY vehicle without a thermostat

The computer see's that & you will have problems

Have you road tested with scanner & looked at all data?

Have you tested the coolant for exhaust gases or the exhaust
for coolant?

Have you removed the radiator & cleaned out all debris & leaves
& then hosed out ALL Coolers? *** Must do that **

Do you have a Blocked Exhaust Converter

Not doing much after 12 years & may be blocked

Any Cylinder Misfires?
What does Fuel Trim tell you?
What is the actual coolant temp?
What is the trans temp?

Why is my 2002 explorer overheating but only blowing cold air randomly, pump was fine. no leaks and no condensation / steam out tailpipes, no mixed fluids.


I just replaced the thermostat assembly on my 2005 ford explorer since they are made of plastic they crack and leak and you can hardly see it because the water retains in the middle of the block hope this help.

Overheating when driving down the road


Most common cause is a internally plugged radiator.
The water and coolant often react negatively to the metals and rubber inside the passageways to clog the radiator over time. If you wish to try to "reverse flush " it yourself, ask "fixya".
Other causes may be: Stuck thermostat, plugged fins of radiator outside, water pump slipping or starting to fail by "freezing up",
loose or slipping serpentine belt, and problem with the engine cooling fan.

My explorer is overheating how do i replace the thermostat or could it be something else


Are the cooling fans coming on?
Clean all the leaves and dirt out of the condenser and radiator
Follow the top rad hose to the thermostat.
If you have a rad cap on the engine vs the radiator, it will be there.
If you are low on coolant or have air in the system,work that issue,leaks etc
Is it really overheating or just the gauge telling you so??

Replaced the broken radiator its still over heating


good be the thermostant. if that has the v6 engine 3.8 then have a block test done you may have warped a head, these engines are none for head problems when they are overheated.

Who determined that the water pump and radiator needed to be replaced? If it was the dealer or an independent garage, bring it back and tell them they guessed wrong. You paid to have the problem fixed and they need to stand behind their work.

This is a problem that's hard to diagnose without being able to check a lot of items and ask questions, but the obvious things to look for if you have a new radiator and water pump (and hopefully a new thermostat) is for air in the cooling system which keeps the coolant from circulating. Also check to see that the cooling fan(s) are operating properly.

Overheating & won't start. Oil & coolant OK.


Sounds like your thermostat is stuck in the closed position. I'd replace the thermostat and flush & refill the coolant.

Heaterblows cool air my temp gauge showing truck is overheating


change the thermostate and gasket after you change it let the truck heat up then cool then refill the radiator again after the thermostate opens do not open the radiaator with the truck hot or the upper hose hard
