  1. Install the timing belt tensioner and tighten the retaining bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (24 Nm), but do not remove the pin at this time.
  2. Check that all timing marks are still aligned.
  3. Use bulldog clips (large paper binder clips) or other suitable tool to secure the timing belt and to prevent it from slacking. Install the timing belt. Starting at the crankshaft, go around the idler pulley, then the front camshaft sprocket, the water pump pulley, the rear camshaft sprocket and the tensioner pulley.
  4. Be sure the belt is tight between the crankshaft and front camshaft sprocket, between the camshaft sprockets and the water pump. Gently raise the tensioner pulley, so that the belt does not sag, and temporarily tighten the center bolt.
  5. Move the crankshaft 1/4 turn counterclockwise, then turn it clockwise to the position where the timing marks are aligned.
  6. Loosen the center bolt of the tensioner pulley. Using MD998767 tensioner tool, and a torque wrench apply 3.3 ft. lbs. (4.4 Nm) tensional torque to the timing belt and tighten the center bolt to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm). When tightening the bolt, be sure that the tensioner pulley shaft does not rotate with the bolt.
  7. Remove the tensioner plunger pin. Pretension is correct when the pin can be removed and installed easily. If the pin cannot be easily removed and installed it is still satisfactory as long as it is within its standard value.
  8. Check that the tensioner pushrod is within the standard value. When the tensioner is engaged the pushrod should measure 0.149–0.177 in. (3.8–4.5mm).
  9. Rotate the crankshaft two revolutions and check the timing marks. If the timing marks are not properly aligned remove the belt and repeat Steps 17 through 23.
  10. Install the timing belt covers.
  11. Install the engine mounting bracket.
  12. Lower the engine enough to install the engine mount onto bracket and remove the floor jack.
  13. Install the power steering pump bracket and pump.
  14. Install the crankshaft pulley and tighten the retaining bolt to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
  15. Install the accessory drive belts.
  16. Properly fill the cooling system.
  17. Connect the negative battery cable.
  18. Check for leaks and proper engine and cooling system operation.

there is a little mark on the crankshaft which you line up with the 'o' mark on the casing ..
remove the cam cover and look at the cam you should see a nob on the cam about 3 th lob and that should be facing just left of the engine ..
if you have a turbo there is two notchs on the injection pump pully ..if turbo there is a 't' mark on the rear of the cover the notch on the pully should mark up with the 't'..
the timing is set..

Understanding Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT)


Variable Camshaft Timing
With all of the gadgets on cars today, most of us find enough to boggle our minds inside of the passenger compartment let alone what's under the hood. Recently, many manufacturers have moved torward VCT's to improve performance, emissions and to eliminate other components. Let's start with the EGR valve or exhaust gas recirculation system. By installing a variable camshaft system on the exhaust camshaft, the manufacturers were able to eliminate the EGR valve, save money, and lower emissions.

VCT's have been installed on exhaust cams, intake cams, both cams and single overhead cams. The system is operated by using engine oil pressure to move a phaser that is mounted to the end of the camshaft and adjusts the camshaft timing while the engine is running. This is a brilliant system and the performance gained is amazing. The oil that is pressurized by the oil pump moves through oil channels to a solenoid that is controlled by the vehicles computer. The computer takes input signals from various sensors, processes the information and sends a signal to the solenoid that operates the cam phaser and in turn, adjusts the camshaft as needed.

How can I keep my variable camshaft system in good working order?
The best way to keep your VCT system is good condition is to perform regular oil changes and use a factory approved oil filter. Use of an aftermarket filter that is not factory approved can damage your engine. The material that makes up the internal portion of the filter must meet strict guidelines to assure that the material doesn't break away and enter the engines oil channels. This could block the oils path to the camshaft phaser and cause conditions such as rough running, noise and poor emissions/fuel economy. Dirty oil is a VCT's worse enemy. A few dollars extra can save thousands in repairs.

Installation of wires
  1. Whenever a high tension wire is removed for any reason from a spark plug, coil or distributor cap, or a new high tension wire is installed, Silicone Dielectric Compound WA-10, D7AZ-19A331-A (ESE-M1C171-A) or equivalent must be applied to boot before it is reconnected. Using a small clean tool, coat entire interior surface of boot with Silicone Dielectric Compound WA-10, D7AZ-19A331-A (ESE-M1C171-A) or equivalent.
  1. Insert each wire on proper terminal of distributor cap. Ensure wires are all the way down over their terminals. The No. 1 terminal is identified on cap. Install wires starting with No. 1 terminal.
  1. Remove wire retaining brackets from old high tension wire set and install them on new set in same relative position. Install wires in brackets on valve rocker arm covers.
  1. Connect wires to proper spark plugs.
  1. Install coil wire.


Installation of distributor
Before installing distributor, visually inspect distributor. Inspect O-ring. It should fit tightly and be free of cuts. The drive gear should be free of nicks, cracks and excessive wear. Rotate distributor drive shaft. It should move freely, without binding.
  1. To install distributor correctly, No. 1 piston must be at Top Dead Center (TDC) of compression stroke. Remove No. 1 cylinder spark plug and rotate engine clockwise until No. 1 piston is on the compression stroke.
  1. With No. 1 piston on compression stroke, align timing pointer with TDC on the crankshaft damper.
  1. Align locating boss on rotor with hole on armature. Fully seat rotor on distributor shaft.
  1. Rotate distributor shaft so blade on rotor is pointing toward mark on distributor base, that was previously made in Step 2 of the Removal procedure.
  1. While installing distributor, continue rotating rotor slightly so leading edge of the vane is centered in vane switch stator assembly.
  1. Rotate distributor in block to align leading edge of vane and vane switch stator assembly. Verify rotor is pointing at No. 1 mark on distributor base. If vane and vane switch stator cannot be aligned by rotating distributor in cylinder block, remove distributor enough to just disengage distributor gear from camshaft gear. Rotate rotor enough to engage distributor gear on another tooth of camshaft gear. Repeat Step 1 if necessary.
  1. Install distributor hold-down clamp and bolt. Tighten bolt, but leave it loose enough to rotate distributor.
  1. Install distributor cap, No. 1 spark plug and ignition wires. Check that ignition wires are securely connected to the cap and spark plugs. Tighten distributor cap hold-down screws to 2.0-2.6 Nm (18-23 lb-in).
  1. Reconnect distributor to wiring harness.
  1. Set initial timing according to procedures found in Section 13A of the Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis Manual .
  1. After timing is set, tighten distributor hold-down bolts to 23-34 Nm (17-25 lb-ft).
  1. Recheck initial timing. Adjust if necessary.

The CVVT (Continuously Variable Valve Timing) system is installed to the chain sprocket of the exhaust camshaft. There is no variation in valve timing of the exhaust cam because the exhaust camshaft is driven by the timing belt. The timing of the intake cam is varied by the relative operation the CVVT vane to the housing. This system helps the engine decrease exhaust gases and increase engine power and fuel economy by changing the valve open/close timing of the intake camshaft.

The code you are getting can be caused by a mechanical problem with the CVVT or with an Engine Control Module (ECM) malfunction. The most common cause of a mechanical failure of this system is debris clogging the very small oil ports that control the position of the CVVT vane hub. Improper oil viscosity can affect this as well as deposits caused by not changing oil at the specified intervals.

There is a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) that deals with properly checking the CVVT system for mechanical/electrical failures. It is bulletin Number 09-EM-002.

Timing Belt Cover, Belt & Sprockets Removal & Installation 2.5L Engine To Remove:
  1. Remove the drive belts.
  2. Remove the A/C compressor drive belt tensioner. Timing belt & cover DOHC exploded view subaru-03-25-6470.gif

  3. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
  4. Remove the mounting bolts and left timing belt cover.
  5. Remove the mounting bolts and right timing belt cover.
  6. Remove the mounting bolts and front timing belt cover.
  7. Vehicles W/ M/T: Remove the timing belt guide.
  8. Ensure that the timing belt rotation arrows are still visible. If the marks are worn off, place new rotation marks on the belt. Timing belt alignment marks DOHC subaru-03-25-6472.gif

  9. Turn the crankshaft using a breaker bar and special adapter socket on the crankshaft. Align the timing mark on the crankshaft sprocket (1), left intake sprocket (2), left exhaust sprocket (3), right intake sprocket (4) and right exhaust sprocket (5) with the notches in cylinder block and timing belt cover.
  10. Paint alignment marks on the timing belt at the crankshaft and camshaft sprockets timing marks. CAUTION
    Do not turn the camshaft sprockets with the timing belt removed. The valves heads will contact each other causing the valve stems to bend.
  11. Remove the lower right idler pulley.
  12. Remove the timing belt.
  13. Remove the upper right idler pulley.
  14. Remove the lower left (toothed) idler pulley.
  15. Remove the belt tensioner.
  16. Hold the sprocket and remove the left intake and exhaust camshafts.
  17. Hold the sprocket and remove the right intake and exhaust camshafts.
  18. Remove the crankshaft sprocket.
To Install:
  1. Install the crankshaft sprocket.
  2. Hold the sprocket and install the right intake and exhaust camshafts with the mounting bolts. Tighten 58 ft-lb (78 Nm).
  3. Hold the sprocket and install the left intake and exhaust camshafts with the mounting bolts. Tighten 58 ft-lb (78 Nm).
  4. Reset the automatic belt tensioner as follows:
    • Remove the mounting bolt and belt tensioner. NOTE: Do not exceed more than 2,205 lb. (9,807 N).
    • Place the belt tensioner on a press. Press the adjuster rod down gradually (using more than 3 minutes) 66- lb (165 N) or more until the adjuster rod is aligned with the stop pin hole in the cylinder.
    • Insert a 0.08 in (2 mm) diameter pin or hex wrench into the pin hole to lock the adjuster rod.
    • Install the automatic belt tension adjuster with the mounting bolt. Tighten 18 ft-lb (25 Nm).
  5. Install the lower left (toothed) idler pulley. Tighten 29 ft-lb (39 Nm).
  6. Install the upper right idler pulley with the mounting bolt. Tighten 29 ft-lb (39 Nm). Crankshaft sprocket and oil pump cover alignment marks 2.5L DOHC subaru-03-25-4890.gif

  7. Align the timing mark on the crankshaft sprocket with the mark on the oil pump cover. Timing belt alignment marks DOHC subaru-03-25-6472.gif

  8. Align the single timing mark on the right exhaust camshaft sprocket with the notch on the timing belt cover.
  9. When the single timing mark on the right exhaust camshaft sprocket is aligned with the notch on the timing belt cover, ensure that the double lines on the intake camshaft and exhaust camshaft sprockets are aligned.
  10. Align the single timing mark on the left exhaust camshaft sprocket with the notch on the timing belt cover by turning the sprocket counter clockwise (viewed from front of engine).
  11. Ensure that the double lines on the intake camshaft and exhaust camshaft sprockets are aligned when the single timing mark on the left exhaust camshaft sprocket is aligned with the notch on the timing belt cover. CAUTION
    • The camshafts can be rotated independently causing the valves heads to contact each other resulting in bent valve stems.
    • When the timing belt is removed the camshafts will turn to the lowest cam lobe position by the force of the valve springs. Before installing the timing belt the 4 camshafts are in the lowest lift position (valves closed).
    • When the camshafts are rotated to install the timing belts, # 2 intake and # 4 exhaust cam lobes of the left camshafts are held to push their corresponding valves down. In this position, these valves are held in the open position. Right camshafts are held so their cam lobes do not push the valves down.
    • The left camshafts must be rotated from the lowest lobe position to the position where the timing belt can be installed at the smallest possible angle in order to prevent intake and exhaust valve contact. Camshaft sprockets rotation subaru-03-25-6473.gif

    • Do not turn the camshafts in the direction shown in the illustration because the valves will open at the same time and contact each other.
    CAUTION
    If the timing belt alignment is off the mark buy more than 3 teeth, the valves and pistons may have contact.

  12. Align the timing marks on the belt with the marks on the sprockets in the numerical order shown in the illustration.
  13. Install the lower right idler pulley with the mounting bolt. Tighten 29 ft-lb (39 Nm).
  14. Ensure that the timing mark alignment is correct and remove the tensioner stop pin.
  15. Vehicles W/ M/T: Install the timing belt guide and temporarily tighten the mounting bolts.
  16. Vehicles W/ M/T: Measure the clearance between the guide and timing belt. The clearance should measure 0.039 ± 0.020 in (1.0 ± 0.5 mm).
  17. Vehicles W/ M/T: Tighten the guide bolts 7.2 ft-lb (9.8 Nm).
  18. Install and secure the front timing belt cover with the mounting bolts.
  19. Install and secure the right timing belt cover with the mounting bolts.
  20. Install and secure the left timing belt cover with the mounting bolts.
  21. Install the crankshaft pulley.
  22. Install the A/C compressor drive belt tensioner.
  23. Install the drive belts.

Where is the location of camshaft sensor, vehicle will not start


The camshaft position sensor (CMP) on the 3.0L OHC (4 valve) and 3.4L SHO engines is a variable reluctance sensor that is triggered by a high point on the left-hand exhaust camshaft sprocket. The CMP sends a signal relating camshaft position back to the PCM which is used by the PCM to control engine timing.

The camshaft position sensor (CMP) on the 3.0L OHV (2 valve) engine is a single hall-effect magnetic switch that is triggered by a single vane which is driven by the camshaft. The CMP sends a signal relating camshaft position back to the PCM which is used by the PCM to control engine timing.

Noting the position of the primary timing chain guide, remove the primary timing chain guide from the upper retaining pin. If they are in phase after installing, remove the sprocket, turn it on its vertical axis and reinstall sprocket. See Fig. 150. <br />Install the chain tensioning tool to the exhaust camshaft sprocket. Reposition the sprocket (and the variable camshaft timing oil control unit) for the most advantageous position for use of the tool. See Fig. 151. Remove the tool. <br />Install the primary timing chain into position over the crankshaft sprocket and the variable camshaft timing oil control unit. There must be no slack on the drive side of the primary timing chain and the sprockets must not be rotated on the camshafts, or the tensioning tool may not fit. See Fig. 152. <br />Install the primary timing chain tensioner blade to the cylinder block. See Fig. 148. Install the pivot bolt and tighten specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. <br />Push the primary timing chain tensioner piston into the tensioner body to provide clearance for installing the primary timing chain. Insert a thin rigid wire through the hole in the end of the tensioner piston to displace the ball from the non-return valve seat. See Fig. 153. With the wire in position, press the piston fully into the tensioner body. Remove the wire. <br />Install the 2 primary timing chain tensioner bolts to the primary timing chain tensioner and locate the tensioner backing-plate on to the 2 bolts. Align and install the primary timing chain tensioner to the cylinder block and to the mating slot on the rear face of the primary timing chain tensioner blade. See Fig. 147. Tighten the primary timing chain tensioner bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. <br />Use a Primary Chain Wedge (303-533), or 2 if needed, between the primary timing chain tensioner and primary timing chain tensioner blade, to take up the slack in the chain for tightening of the variable camshaft timing control unit and exhaust camshaft sprocket. See Fig. 154. <br />Using the chain tensioning tool, apply force to the tool in an counterclockwise direction to tension the chain on its drive side. See Fig. 151. While applying opposing force to the sprocket and chain, tighten the exhaust camshaft sprocket bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. <br />Using the Variable Camshaft Timing Oil Control Unit Setting Tool (303-654), rotate the variable camshaft timing oil control unit fully counterclockwise to the fully retarded position. See Fig. 155. <br />Check that the primary chain wedges are still in place. While applying opposing force to the sprocket and chain using the chain tensioning tool, tighten the variable camshaft timing oil control unit bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. Remove the chain tensioning tool and the primary chain wedges and camshaft locking tool. <br />Raise and support vehicle. Remove crankshaft setting peg. Install the CKP sensor and bolt to the flywheel housing. See Fig. 143. Tighten the CKP sensor bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. Install the access grommet to the housing and lower the vehicle. <br />WARNING:Check that the ring dowels are engaged squarely. Fully locate the assembly as much as possible by hand. Failure to follow this procedure may result in damage to the vehicle. <br /><br />Install NEW "O" rings to the variable camshaft timing oil control unit housing. Lubricate the "O" rings and the bushing. Install the variable camshaft timing oil control unit housing. See Fig. 142. Install the variable camshaft timing oil control unit housing bolts. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. <br />Install the variable camshaft timing oil control solenoid. See Fig. 141. Install and tighten the variable camshaft timing oil control solenoid bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. <br />Install the timing chain cover. See TIMING CHAIN COVER (NON-SUPERCHARGED). </span><br /></td></tr></tbody></table>

Need to know how to install a new distributor and the firing order for a 4 cyl


Firing order is 1342. #1 cylinder is closest to front. (By pulleys)

Engine Not Rotated
  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
  2. Turn the engine over until No. 1 cylinder is at TDC of the compression stroke.
  3. Remove the distributor cap. Remove the wire harness connected to the side of the distributor.
  4. Mark the position of the distributor base in relation to the engine block with white paint or other suitable marking material, for reference when reinstalling the distributor.
  5. Loosen and remove the distributor hold-down bolt and clamp.
  6. Carefully begin lifting the distributor up and out. Once the shaft is clear of the engine compartment, inspect the shaft for cracks in the O-seal, the condition of the shaft drive gear and any other part which could lead to distributor problems in the future.

To install:
  1. Check to make sure the engine is still at TDC. Inspect distributor shaft hole to make sure it is free of dirt.
  2. Rotate distributor shaft until the painted mark on rotor is pointing toward painted mark on engine block made during removal.
  3. Continue rotating rotor slightly so leading edge of the vane is centered in vane the switch stator assembly.
  4. Dip entire distributor gear in engine assembly lubricant D9AZ-19579-D or equivalent.

If installing a new distributor, ALWAYS add engine assembly lubricant to the engine oil by pouring it through distributor hole onto the camshaft gear. Run engine at idle for at least five minutes before driving.
  1. Rotate distributor in block to align leading edge of vane and vane switch stator assembly. Verify rotor is pointing at No. 1 mark on distributor base.

If vane and vane switch stator cannot be aligned by rotating distributor in cylinder block, remove distributor enough to just disengage distributor gear from camshaft gear. Rotate rotor enough to engage distributor gear on another tooth of the camshaft gear.
  1. Install the distributor retaining bolt and tighten so the distributor can just barely be moved.
  2. Install the distributor cap and, tighten screws to 18-23 inch lbs. (2.0-2.6 Nm).
  3. Reconnect battery cable. Start vehicle, and check timing. If timing needs adjustment, refer to the Ignition Timing section.
  4. After timing has been set, tighten distributor hold-down bolt to 17-2 ft. lbs. (23-34 Nm).

Engine Rotated with Distributor Removed
  1. If the crankshaft was rotated while the distributor was removed, the engine must be brought to TDC on the compression stroke of the No. 1 cylinder.
  2. Remove the No. 1 spark plug. Place a finger over the hole and rotate the crankshaft slowly in the direction of normal rotation until engine compression is felt.
  3. When engine compression is felt at the spark plug hole, indicating that the piston is approaching TDC, continue to turn the crankshaft until the timing mark on the pulley is aligned with the 0 mark on the engine front cover.
  4. Turn the distributor shaft until the ignition rotor is at the No. 1 firing position.
  5. Rotate distributor shaft so the blade on rotor is pointing toward paint mark on distributor base made during removal.
  6. Continue rotating rotor slightly so leading edge of the vane is centered in vane switch stator assembly. Verify rotor is pointing at No. 1 mark on distributor base.

If vane and vane switch stator cannot be aligned by rotating distributor in cylinder block, remove distributor enough to just disengage distributor gear from camshaft gear. Rotate rotor enough to engage distributor gear on another tooth of the camshaft gear.
  1. Install the distributor retaining bolt and tighten so the distributor can just barely be moved.
  2. Install the rotor and distributor cap and connect all wiring. Tighten distributor cap to 18-23 inch lbs. (2.0-2.6 Nm).

The CVVT (Continuously Variable Valve Timing) system is installed to the chain sprocket of the exhaust camshaft. There is no variation in valve timing of the exhaust cam because the exhaust camshaft is driven by the timing belt. The timing of the intake cam is varied by the relative operation the CVVT vane to the housing. This system helps the engine decrease exhaust gases and increase engine power and fuel economy by changing the valve open/close timing of the intake camshaft. The deviation of the camshaft position from the target point is evaluated during stable driving condition. The PCM accumulates this deviation for a certain period and sets DTC P0010 when the accumulated deviation is too high. The target camshaft position is a predetermineded value depending on engine speed and throttle angle communicated to the PCM. The MOST FREQUENT CAUSE is DIRTY OIL. The NEXT most frequent cause is restriction/obstruction of OIL FLOW to the CVVT unit (oil control valve supplies this). Remove this valve & inspect it for aluminium flashing (bits of metal which might be interferring with the valve's operation). We use Z-MAX treatment to solve this problem at our service center (after changing oil & filter (genuine Hyundai Oil Filter).b0f9f5a.jpg

  1. Insert each ignition wire on proper terminal of distributor cap . Ensure ignition wires are properly seated on the terminals. The No. 1 terminal is identified on distributor cap .
not sure if #1 cylinder is on the front right or front left. Call a dealer.

Installation
Before installing distributor , visually inspect distributor . Inspect the O-ring. It should fit tightly and be free of cuts. The drive gear should be free of nicks, cracks and excessive wear. Rotate distributor drive shaft. It should move freely, without binding.
  1. To install distributor correctly, No. 1 piston (6108) must be at Top Dead Center (TDC) of compression stroke. Remove No. 1 cylinder spark plug (12405) and rotate crankshaft (6303) clockwise until No. 1 piston is on the compression stroke.
  1. With No. 1 piston on compression stroke, align timing pointer with TDC on the crankshaft damper.
  1. Align locating boss on distributor rotor with hole on armature. Fully seat distributor rotor on distributor shaft.
  1. Rotate distributor shaft so blade on distributor rotor is pointing toward mark on distributor base that was previously made in Step 2 of the Removal procedure.
  1. While installing, continue rotating distributor rotor slightly so leading edge of the vane is centered in vane switch stator assembly.
  1. Rotate distributor in engine front cover to align leading edge of vane and vane switch stator assembly. Verify distributor rotor is pointing at No. 1 mark on distributor base. If vane and vane switch stator cannot be aligned by rotating distributor in engine front cover , remove distributor enough to just disengage distributor gear from camshaft gear. Rotate distributor rotor enough to engage distributor gear on another tooth of camshaft gear. Repeat Step 1 if necessary.
  1. Install distributor hold-down clamp and bolt. Tighten bolt, but leave it loose enough to rotate distributor .
  1. Install distributor cap , No. 1 spark plug and ignition wires. Check that ignition wires are securely connected to the distributor cap and spark plugs . Tighten distributor cap hold-down screws to 2.0-2.6 Nm (18-23 lb-in).
  1. Reconnect distributor to engine control sensor wiring .
  1. Set initial engine ignition timing according to procedures found in Section 8A of the Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis Manual.
  1. After engine ignition timing is set, tighten distributor hold-down bolt on to 20-30 Nm (15-22 lb-ft).
  1. Recheck initial engine ignition timing. Adjust if necessary.
