Check the firing order for the plug leads as it only needs 2 to be crossed for this problem. Next have a compression test done to check for valve problems.

1988 2.8 s10 idles rough and backfires out tb. replaced ignition module and spark control unit, coil, plugs and wires. No help.


In a nutshell...Choke valve, linkage and fast idle cam must operate freely. A non-functioning idle stop solenoid (if equipped) could cause stalling or rough idle. The reason why is that it minimizes strain on starter and battery and reduces the possibility of backfiring when attempting to start the engine. Check to see if it is equipped with the above Solenoid and the other three items are in proper working order. If this doesn't help we go to the next steps.

1988 oldsmobile ninety eight only runs rough @backfires


Worn Timing Gear & jumped a tooth or two
Check that out
If you rock the crank back & forth with a long
ratchet,with the distributor cap off & the rotor
doesn't move right away then you maybe on to that issue
The fix is to remove the side subframe bolts & lower it
enough to get your puller on & the damper off
You could try using a timing light on # 1 wire &
then on the one half way thru the firing order
The timing should be close with either
Crack the throttle & watch the reaction of timing
light
Point here is backfire is most likely some type of
timing issue,could be combined with other issues
that contribute
I assume the spark plugs are not more than 3 years old
& you have cleaned up the rotor & cap
The plugs wires last some times 15 years,but not forever

My 1988 dodge d150 runs rough when cold and going uphills


how old is this truck ? needs complete tuneup, new air & fuel filters, wintertime brings out the all the problems, also, replace EGR valve, & PCV valve, they will choke the hell out of the engine, your filters are very important also, if there dirty/old, they will starve the engine. talk to the ole girl while you do all this work, she'll respond, I promise !!!! make sure all the vacumn lines are good, tighten all throttle body bolts, etc

HEVROLET BLAZER 2000 MISFIRING


Timing is off,problem with timing chain,also check fluids in ******,plus also if you have a distributer in your vehicle,if it is cracked,moisture getting in and ruining the points,-that is if your vehicle has a distributer! This will make a vehicle run rough as well.
You can have new plugs put in,but if your spark plug wires are cracked or worn,this will also creat misfire and backfiring.

88 GMC C1500 idle problem


Unfortunately, the ECM isn't "OK"...Get a read on the computer and go from there...if I had to guess I'd say ALL the O2 sensors are fouled...especially if you use gas additives or starting fluid.
