Install the halfshaft into the hub and bearing assembly. Install a new hub nut. Insert a drift into the caliper and rotor to prevent the rotor from turning. Tighten the hub nut to 107 ft. lbs. (145 Nm).

  • You don't need to use a torque speck really on an axle bolt. Just snug it by hand real good and make sure to stick a new cotter pin in through the axle and axle bolt to prevent the bolt from self un-threading. That all I have really ever done.

  • Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa.

2002 pt cruizer changed both front wheel bearings and long axle rightside now there is a humming noise on drivers side when driving and ideas thanks

It is entirely possible to have a bad replacement wheel bearing. There are many cheap ones available and I've found that you get what you pay for. I prefer Timken bearings myself. Also, the drive axle nut torque is critical in ensuring that you don't cause bearing failure. Too loose or too tight will cause bearings to fail in short order. The axle nut is not one that can be "shade tree torqued" by "grunt-power".

New hub assembly

General Motors has released a new style drive axle nut for many 97-03 models. This new and improved nut is a torque prevailing style nut(basically it distributes the torque properly) for mor consistent clamp load on the wheel bearing. The new nut is silver in color and the old nut is usually black in color. They have also lowered the torque on most all of the models. The original torque for many of these vehicles was 284 FT/Lbs. THey have dropped this torque to 173 Ft/Lbs, then they dropped it again down to 112-118 Ft/Lbs.
