Why won't the caliper retract when I loosen the bleeder valve?

I had someone change squeaking front brake pads for me. After driving for a couple miles and then braking the front right passenger caliper would not release...smoke billowed out of wheel well accompanied by a horrible smell! After 2 sets of brake pads(melted the first set),2 calipers(thought the first one was bad), the flexible gas hose, and a quart and a half of brake fluid I am about ready to strangle someone, lol!!!! I am thinking that perhaps I need a master cylinder? Any help thrown my way would be greatly appreciated.

I would have said a seized caliper but if you changed that and it still did it then I would assume it's ur master BUT... if it was your master then both calipers would be lazy. I would check the lines to the problem caliper for kinks or pinches. Also check your proportioning valve

Have the brake pads been so very work they are down to the metal? This could cause the caliper piston to extend too far and not be able to retract properly.
Calipers Fail mostly from a cut in the rubber boot around the pistion dirt and debris get in there and rust the piston and it cannot retract properly Do they retract after they cool Down? if so the brake fluid has "boiled" if brake fluid is not changed about every 24,000 miles condensation builds up and lowers the boiling point of the brake fluid causing this problem.
Tell me does it happen after a long drive or siting a long time in heavy bumper to bumper traffic in hot summer weather? I recommend a complete brake fluid flush an change the calipers with NEW ones ot rebuilt and use dielectric grease on all points of metal to metal contact between the caliper an the mount bracket and thee ends of thee pada n the slide points they ride on and the pins that go through thecaliper and thread into the mount only dielectric not regular grease it will cause sticking and a worse problem than you have now.

Front, remove the hold down clip, should be a 7mm or a 45 torx bit to get the slider pins out. If you are not sure what you are doing, please spend a little money and have a pro do it for your safety, and the safety of others around you.

You may have contaminated brake fluid. The fluid gets too hot, caused the fluid to expand and lock up your brakes. once it cools it will allow you to move. Flush the brake system, start at the wheel farthest from the master cylinder and bleed the system until all the old dirty fluid is out. Just allow it to gravity bleed, don't waste your time doing the pump and release method. It only gives your buddy a sore foot and if you miscue you **** air back into the line.

First you want to remove brake fluid from brake resovoir, raise front wheels off ground and set park brake or block rear wheels. Remove front wheels, keep steering wheel unlocked so you can turn rotors side to side. Loosen bolts that hold caliper end gently pry caliper free from rotor, remove caliper and remove pads, use bungy cord to hang caliper away from rotor, have rotors measured to see if they are thick enough to have machined, replace if out of specs. Match up pads with old ones, use anti- squeak red liquid and put layer on back of pads, let dry. Use tool to put pistons back into calipers, slowly put pistons back into bore while opening up bleeder screw so ABS won't be damaged. After rotors resurfaced, wash with rubbing alchohal to remove any oils from hands, install rotors and reverse putting pads back onto caliper and reinstall, torque caliper bolts to factory specs and tighten bleeder screws. Install wheels, torque lug nuts to factory specs and replace brake fluid in resovoir. Lower car carefully to ground and press brake peddle without pumping it. Any air in system should bleed out, if not get someone to help with bleeding system. Road test to ensure no squeaks or pulling, burn brakes in slowly.

I changed the front brake pads and now have no pressure when i press the brake peddal. the master cylinder is full but still no pressure. what did i do wrong?


You may not have done anything wrong. You won't have any pressure the first couple of times that you press the brake pedal. Try pumping the brakes a few times. When you change the pads you have to open the caliper all the way up to get the caliper back on. When you press the brake the pads won't go all the way to the caliper on the first couple of times you press the brake. But once you pump the pedal, it should build up pressure. If not you will have to bleed the brakes.

Will I need a caliper reset tool kit to change the brakes on my 2007 toyota sienna or will a standard c-clamp do the job? And since it is an ABS system, I assume that brakes must be bled, correct?


Brake Pads Removal & Installation Front To Remove:
  1. Remove the front wheels. Front brake caliper (exploded view) toyota-09-00-5838.gif

  2. Loosen the caliper bleeder.
  3. Hold the slide pin; remove the 2 mounting bolts and remove the brake caliper from the support.
  4. Support the caliper.
  5. Open the brake bleeder. Press the caliper piston into the bore.
  6. Close the bleeder after the piston has reached the bottom of the caliper bore.
  7. Remove the brake pads, support plates, wear indicators and anti squeal shims.
  8. Remove the slide pins and bushings from the caliper support.
To Install:
  1. Lubricate the slide pins and bushings with brake grease.
  2. Install the bushing on the slide pin.
  3. Install the slide pin on the caliper support.
  4. Install the brake pad support plates on the caliper supports.
  5. Lubricate the anti squeal shims with brake grease.
  6. Install the anti squeal shims on the brake pads.
  7. Install the pad wear indicator facing upward and install the pads on the caliper support.
  8. Install the caliper on the support.
  9. Install the 2 mounting bolts, hold the slide pins and tighten 25 ft-lb (34 Nm).
  10. Fill the reservoir and bleed the brakes.
  11. Install the front wheels.
Rear To Remove:
  1. Remove the rear wheels.
  2. Loosen the caliper bleeder. Rear brake caliper (exploded view) toyota-09-00-5842.gif

Trying to replace the brake pads. what do i need to do to get the caliper to go back in so i can put it on over the brake pads again?


you can loosen the bleeder valve and then use a C clamp to press it back in and then retighten the valve, You will lose a little fluid but will not need to re-bleed the lines.

No fluid to the front calipers


Hi Friend:

#1) Check to see if the Master Cylinder Rubber on the Cap is Not Calapesed.And fits Even in the Metel Cap.

#2) Fill master up to MAX Level, Bleed Brakes Start with the Passenger Rear,Then Drivers Rear,During the Bleeding Make Sure to Keep Master Cylinder Full off & On.Bleed each Cyling until you get good Clean Fluid from the Blleeder Valves. USE DOT-3 Fluid.And Make Sure theres no Air Left in The System on Each Cylinder

#3) After the Rears are done Next Go to Passengers Front Caliper ,Bleed The Same Way here.Of course you'll need 1-Person Pumping Pedal during Whole Process.

#4) If you Are Still NOT getting Fluid out Of your Bleeder Valves in Front.

#5) Making Sure your Masters Cylinder is Full.You'll see bleeder Valves On MASTER CYLINDER. Loosen bleeder valve while someone is Pushing Pedal to the Floor.The Tighten before The Pedal is Let off.Keep it to The Floor Each time you Open Bleeder Valve.

#6) Do both Sides.If you still are Not getting Fluid from the Front Brake Bleeder Valves. Then Your MASTER CYLINDER is BAD Or your FRONT Brake Pads are Worn Down so Far your Caliper Piston is Bottomed Out.

#7) If this is the case Replace Pads 1st ,If not Fluid Still .

#8) Replace the Master Cylinder.

#9) After Replacing Pads or and Both,Flush out your Fluid from the Complete System until you get Clean Fluid from All your Blleeder Valves. With No Air In The System As Well.

no that is only the older rear calipers on gm and others. the fronts do not have that style caliper and sound like the calipers are frozen and may be way your changing the pads. try opening the bleeder screw and then compressing them if they go then you need need brake hoses and if not you need calipers. god luck man

Changing front breaks on a 2006 titan...cant seem to get the caliper over the new break pads


hi , your caliper pistons are not retracted all the way in , use 1 of the old pads against the piston(s) use a big channel locks or big c clamp , open the bleeder screw , compress the piston(s) back in all the way , lock the bleeder screw , when calipers are reinstalled , don't forget to pump the pads out with the brake pedal before your throw it in gear , because the first couple of brake pedal strokes will reset the pads to the rotors . then recheck the brake fluid level .

what you need to do is line clamp brake hose so you dont push dirty brake fluid back into your system..(you can use a pair of needle nose visegrips if you dont own an actual line clamp) loosen bleeder at this point, remove caliper from attatching bracket, with old pad still installed next to piston use a big C-clamp to compress piston, just make sure clamp is centered and compress slowly allowing brake fluid to escape through loosened bleeder... once compressed tighten bleeder and install caliper and pads remove lineclamp....******NOTE******* no need to bleed the system cause of lineclamp procedure... Make sure upon reassembly you use plenty of brake lube on all sliding caliper parts...Good Luck
