Question about Cars & Trucks

Open Question

I have a 2002 saxo 1.4 auto. On initial start in the morning, have to give it a bit of gas to get in going then runs with a misfire but clears after a minute or so. It will the run ok all day. If left for an hour or so will start with a very slight misfire but thats almost un noticable. Seems to be the longer you leave it the worse it is. Has had new coil and plugs. But nothing has changed. Codes from ecu ere p0300 misfire multiple cylinder. Any help will be amazin

SOURCE: Random Cylinder Misfire

Get a Haynes manual for your vehicle and use the troubleshooting guide there.  about $20 from amazon, auto parts store or haynes.com.  This WILL save you time and shortcut this and any future diagnosis. Haynes IMHO are top notch and I like them better than some factory service manuals that fgo for $100 and more.

David, 99 Saturn,  Cam position sensor codes seem to indicate a engine timing (not spark, but crankshaft/camshaft sync).  Old timing belts or worn tensioners can cause belts to jump a tooth or two which can have a pretty dramatic effect.  The belt could also be old/dryrot and have lost a tooth or two causing it to jump.  If any of these are the case, or if the timing belt interval is near,  replace timing belt, tensioner, idler roller if present and water pump.  FYI, quality OEM ignition wires shold last at least 10 years.  If they are really bad, you can open the engine compartment on a dark night and you will see sparks arcing between them and/or something metal nearby.  We all replace wires when we are not sure what the problem is, and regardless of what anyone tells you, it only rarely solves anything unless the car is more than 10 years old.

good luck.

Use a bottle of yellow HEET dry gas / fuel dryer to remove moisture in your fuel tank.

Check the coil + wires for water / moisture drip / wetness.

It could have been water in the gas or bad gas, either way i would run some dry gas threw it and i wouldn't get gas at that gas station for a while.

Check for error codes (DTCs) before going any further. Sounds like a fuel problem (fuel pump, injectors, etc.) which may have been affected by bad gas. Try a good fuel additive (cleaner) as well.

Hi:
Usually the only thing that causes a blinking check engine light is a cylinder misfire. Usually this is caused by a failed ignition module, but to find out specifically, might take some guessing, or a computer download. You can scan the car's computer system, anf find out what codes are tripped. Most auto parts stores, like autozone, will do this for free. If you detect a cylinder misfire code, or similar, that is what you need to get fixed..

spray some carb cleaner on the passeger side of the intake manifold, right behind the alternator. it is very common for those to leak there and cause those exact problems

Stalls on morning startup unless you blip the throttle a bit

try unpluging the aic control valve while its off see if it will run by itself in the morning, open a small vacum port if it wont idle under these conditions if it idels without stalling i would try cleaning the iac valve with carb cleaner, you may also check the fuel injector o-rings and the coolant temp sensor if its out of range it will not enrich the mixture when its cold you may check this first its located on the block it think please rate good luck -jeff

sounds to me like you need a new head gasket. top off your coolant overflow bottle. run vehicle as if nothing was happening and in few days check level of coolant in the bottle. OR you can check the cylinders for coolant intrussion by removing all 4 spark plugs in the morning after you use the car the day before. You will most likely find coolant down there. (check to see if the pistons are nice and clean on top / washed by the coolant) I have done a few and have seen a few beeing replaced for the same symptom. RUNS ROUGH FOR FEW SECONDS AFTER START UP. Thats the coolant in cylinder washing the plug down, resulting in misfire until the coolant burnes of inside the cylinder, that's when the car will run OK. Let me know what you find.
