Question about Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

2004 PT Cruiser

Car lost power then died while driving, turn ignition key and no start, not even a click. Replaced PCM(computer), good alternator, good starter, good battery, no blown fuses or relays. Tried clicking the key on and off 3 times in order to see what if any trouble codes came up but get nothing. What on earth can I be missing, its as if there is not even an engine under the hood when I turn the key. I am a rather proficient and able mechanic as I worked as a mechanic at a BMW/VW/Audi shop for years so I know a bit more than the average bear, and from what I gather this appears to be a common issue with PT Cruisers, however I am at the point where I have tried everything including replacing the computer in order to solve this problem and certainly cannot afford to take it to the dealership. PLEASE PLEASE HELP, any and/or all ideas would be very appreciated, thank you.

Lets start at the beginning.
Do you have a check engine light when you turn the key switch on ?
Is the starter relay getting power from the key switch ?
Are all of the fuses in the box near the battery hot with the key on ?

Testimonial: "No check engine light when key switched into the ON nor the START positions on the ignition switch. Relay is good but not sure about power supply to the relay. Just to ensure I am checking the relay terminals correctly, which of the 5 prongs(three on top and two on the bottom with a gap between the two bottom prongs) do I place the black and red multi meter leads on and how much voltage or amperage should I be looking for, as I do not have the elec. scematics for this model of car available at present time? By the way thank you so so much for taking the time to help me with this, I can't even begin to explain how much the assistance is needed given the urgency and the fact that as much as I hate to admit it even to myself, I sir am at the point to where I am stumped and must find and fix this problem so thank you once more for your time and knowhow."

seems to have power going to the fuse box near the battery as well as the starter relay located inside the same fuse box, though its not beyond the realm of possibility that I am testing the fuse box and relay incorrectly as auto electric is certainly my weak point when it comes to repair, I have a multi-meter but like I said i cant say that I am 100% sure I am testing it correctly. Any guidance on testing the power supply would be greatly appreciated. At this point with all the items I have eliminated as being the problem the only things left that I can figure are the cause is the relays or the ignition switch. Again thank you for you time and assistance!

Some of the online auto parts stores have repair guides available for free which would give you the basic wiring diagrams.

There are several fuses that power the engine computer along with the ASD relay.

I would probably want to check all of the circuits coming out of the key switch. You must have that check engine light on to know the computer has power.

Troubleshooting pt cruiser

Most likely the alternator is bad. Best way for you to check is start it up, then pull the negative cable off the battery. If it dies the alternator is dead. As far as it draining when parked, I have replace a lot of the ignition lock set and keys because you can put it in the accessory position(All the way back) and pull the key out. Leaving on things like the radio.

2006 pt cruiser lost power while driving an now no start just loud clicking noise

From your brief description, It sounds like you lost your ground connection. Check the Negative (black) terminal connector on the battery, and check where the cable connects to the chassis.
Even if I misunderstand your description, that should be a good place to start!

2004 PT Cruiser lost power then died, wont start now.

If no check engine comes up, it would be PCM. PCM must set CHECK ENGINE LAMP when IG on.. Also check other instrument panel warning lamp come up. If not, Main Ampere Fuse must be checked.

I would want to know what the trouble codes are in the computer since the check engine light is on.
Those codes would help you or a mechanic know where to start checking.
If the alternator is not charging the battery, and you know for a fact the battery and alternator are ok, the problem could be a fuse or fuseable link wire, or the computer.

Won't start-clicking sound-good lights

the battery is low on power. the lights will still light for a bit longer but your engine needs more cranking amps to turn it over. Have someone help you jump the car. or if you have a manual transmission, get the car moving 5mph+ somehow (push or hill) and pop the clutch out with the keys in the ignition in the on position. your car will start right up. if your car regularly needs jumped you probably have a bad battery. if your car looses power while driving you have a bad alternator.

Pt wont start or turn over

try to get a jump from a friend and see what happens, does the same, faulty starter, may need replacing, try to use small hammer and tap lightly on the starter couple time and have a friend start the car while you tap lightly on it. check ignition switch where you stick the key in. stick the key in the ignition and turn the key back and forth jiggle and wiggle it and see if your igniting will make contact. do it several time to test and see if its the ignition problems, this part is not cheap to replace.
