Had the same problem with my escape, the tach speedometer and all gauges but fuel went to zero. most all the lights came on. when i went to restart it nothing, but I noticed the security light was flashing rapidly I SMACKED the top of the dash with the key off, and everything came back good. long story short it turned out to happen more and more, till I found out it was a faulty instrument cluster. had to have it replaced at dealer $650.00 total. if this is the problem make sure to report it to the NTSP (national transportation safety board) if enough people report it it will become a recall issue and it will either be repaired free or you will get reimbursed if you save your receipt.

The problem original would have been the battery failure but if you had the jump start done incorrectly then the resultant power surge may have knocked out the cpu unit and that is why nothing works properly. Try having the cpu reset by a fault code reader and keep your fingers crossed. You may be lucky

Testimonial: "It didn't need boosting when we left the house! But did notice the starter turning slower than normal! This has to be a water problem, or a battery issue! I have no other choice to work on it myself due to lack of funds. A-zone bumped their heads , cant find a battery for less than a $100! I have to recover first, had serious surgery"

but would the weak battery cause the instument panel to go haywire?

  • David Campbell Jul 24, 2013

and it runs with positive cable off

  • Bill Boyd Jul 25, 2013

The cpu needs full voltage to work properly and if you can run without the battery lead on then you are running on alternator output only. I dont have much faith in battery products btu you can try a product called innox sold at spares/ battery stores It may help but otherwise you are stuck. I wish I could buy a battery for $100.00 dollars as over here they star at around $130.00 for el- cheapo

Try dis connecting the negative side of your battery for 5 minutes. Hook the battery back up and see if the theft system reset itself. It has to be the negative side only. Hope this works.

SOURCE: car was running fine, stopped

Was the anti-theft system activated? Mine did that and had to be taken in to Ford. As a result of an immobilized engine my battery ended up being drained...... $225 later (was not covered by extended warranty :( ) my car finally was fixed... now my upper motor mount needs replacing

I went to reverse the car out of a parking place at the grocery store and it wouldn't go in reverse. What could the problem be.\

Hello and welcome to FixYa!
One cause why it wouldn't go in reverse is because of a bad TCM (transmission control module). If the TCM is faulty something in the transmission will surely fail. Please have the TCM checked and replace if necessary.
Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

If there is spark out of one coil than its not the crank sensor.

does this have one coil assembly with 6 posts or are there three individual coils?

If it has three individual coils try swapping the coil that works with one that doesn't. If the one that wasn't working now works and the one that was working doesn't than you have a bad module. If the coil that was working still works and the coil that doesn't work still doesn't work than you have a bad coil.

If it has one coil with 6 posts I would replace the coil and the module. It is not uncommon for the coils to go bad and take out the module at the same time.

Was driving down the road and it just went dead. It's getting gas and fire but will not crank.

I encountered a similar problem on a chev 4cyl with a coil pack ignition ( no distributor). It would run for a while and suddenly die out and wouldn't restart until a 10 to 20 min. cooling period. It turned out to be a crankshaft position sensor going bad. On this engine it was located in the engine block under the ignition module on the firewall side.

2003 escape turned off while driving had no water it was dripping oil and won't turn on

I have no idea what kind of advice you would like

You could have checked the coolant in the morning
as well as the oil & still while driving you lost a head
gasket & it went into failsafe & shut off

When you say dripping oil, I don't get a good
feeling & your not saying where it is or what
you are doing with your suv.

I wouldn't be supprised if you find out
the motor is ruined,hope not

Instrument panel battery and fuel cap not closed lights are inop,

Ask the parts store if your Escape has a separate regulator or if the regulator is built into the new alternator.

If the regulator is part of the Alternator, check the plug-in for the small wires that attach to the Alternator. Look for corrosion and broken wires in and around the plug. If you can't find a problem the new Alternator is shorting out inside the case.

If the autoparts place can spin test the Alternator they should be able to verify the problem and warranty the part. Its not a good idea to drive the vehicle like this because the computer can be damaged by the short. If you have a separate Regulator replace it and start the vehicle.

I had a Lincoln with a bad alternator and the Speedo and Odometer were showing me covering distance at 60MPH when the engine and car was Parked idling. I would be very surprised if the Alternator is not the problem.
