Could be engine "ping" from bad octane in your gas. Try a gas treatment like STP octane boost. If is still does this, check your oil, bad rods or low oil can make this sound too. Try Rislone for oil treatment or Slick 50.

2002 Subaru Forester with grinding noise and banging from back end, and occasional surge/power drop. Is this a differtial, wheel bearings or some other problem?

Sounds like the differential to me, when the power drops you are probably crunching a broken piece thru the ring and pinion gears. This can be very dangerous, could lock the back wheels up while you are driving down the road and get you or someone else killed.

Rattle in low gears when clutch is let out...

Subaru's are notorious for having exhaust rattles from the heat shields on the catalytic converter.

Does the noise go away or lessen when the engine gets hot? I know it seems unrelated, but on my 2002 Impreza it made a lower groan sound at first when ever I would shift gears as the engine speed (RPM) dropped. I put up with it for a year then finally I got a stainless steel hose clamp from the hardware store and put it around the heat shield.

Truly I should just get a new catalytic converter, they are around $200, but the hose clamp stopped the noise.

This might not have anything to do with it your noise. It is a cheap and easy fix though.

Good Luck

Loud engine whine (like a jet noise) from 2002 subaru forester

Have you crawled under the vehicle and personally inspected your exhaust line from manifold to tail pipe? The roaring sound usually occur when there is a hole in the exhaust line. I had it happen to my forester before. A hole half the size of a dime made my subaru sound like my old 74 chevy pickup.
