Uneven Braking on rear axle

Braking is even on hand brake but not on foot brake. Have replaced Wheel Cylinder.,De-glazed linings and drum.

My right rear wheel on a 1999 dodge caravan locked up


There are a few things that can cause this,you will have to remove the wheel and brake drum to inspect it . Seized wheel bearing, grease or oil on brake linings,seized cable,if hydraulic seized wheel cylinder pistons. If the linings have oil or grease on them replace them on both sides for even braking.

Warped rotors are usually the problem, but you cannot see? They can be measured for trueness...however with the pulling in different directions, I think your next fix would be to bleed all 4 brake lines...starting at rear farthest from the master cylinder, then other rear, then front farthest from master cylinder...lastly the front closet to the master cylinder...Pressure can feel constant, but pulling is usually caused by air in the lines...this can get worse...may not be an expensive repair if you can bleed the lines with a friend or pedal pusher system...Also check brake fluid level...was it extremely low, and you recently added some?

I have a 67 Bonneville with drum brakes in front. It pulls to the right when braking. I have readjusted both sides and replaced the flex hoses but still pulls. Any suggestions?


Justin, Not sure if you put in new brake shoes/drums etc. Brake Pedal should be firm not spongy when you press brake down, and not spongy. Push brake pedal down hard and hold, if pedal sinks to floor you have air in lines or bad brake wheel cylinder. When adjusting the brakes , Make sure Master brake cylinder is full!...Have the tire/wheel bolted on...adjust the brakes so brake shoes cannot be tightened up against drum any further. This will center the whole assembly. Wheel should not be able to spin whatsoever...Then back off the star adjuster to loosen one click at a time while trying to spin the wheel. Make so the wheel just barely turns without the brake shoe dragging (inside assembly) on the brake drum. Do the other side so it is exactly them same looseness as other. I like to have brake adjustment so wheel turns almost completely freely with a little drag from brake shoe. Then try driving. If still same pulling...Bleed the brakes to remove air out. (Should be You tube videos showing how) While bleeding brakes, remove master brake cylinder and refill with fluid after you bleed the brake line for each time you bleed then close the brake line bleed bolt/screw. After you do left and rt front...then trying driving again. IF it still pulls....You can disassemble the whole front brake system both sides and rebuild both of the brake cylinders with kit or buy new assembled brake cylinders and replace by simply unbolting old and bolt in new. Clean all brake parts and backing plate with brake cleaner spray from auto stores One or both brake cylinder pistons inside the cylinders maybe corroded/dirty and seizing up causing one side to be doing al the braking. It would be a good time to buy all new hardware kit for each front assembly as well as long as you have it apart. With brakes removed...have brake drums checked to see if still in spec...as drums could be worn out past spec...If worn uneven ...have them turned/machined just the minimum amount to bring back in spec. Good time to replace inner and outer wheel bearings as well if not replaced for long time. Be on the safe side...Many local car clubs have members who would be happy to help you. Check your local National Street Rod Association for help! There are repair manuals for your Pontiac you can buy as well. Some people might tell you to put on expensive disc brake conversion...Don't ...unless you are filthy rich. It's Simply not needed. Good Luck. Many online you tube videos showing you what to do.

1999 plymouth breeze. step on brakes and the front brakes have a bad pulsing to them. previous owner hab brakes done rotars turned and pads replaced. any suggestions on how to address this problem

Advice: Check for moisture anywhere around the wheel cylinder. Moisture is an indication of a leaking wheel cylinder. A leaking wheel cylinder should be either rebuilt or replaced. If a wheel cylinder is allowed to leak brake fluid onto the new shoes, it will ruin the new shoes causing the brakes to grab and emit a growling or rumbling noise when applied. Recommendations: Rebuild or replace leaking wheel cylinders.Operation: The brake lines act as a conduit for the brake fluid, supplying each wheel with the hydraulic action necessary for brake operation. The system is made up predominantly with metal brake lines. Flexible hoses are used at the wheels to accomadate the movement of suspension and steering. Advice: Check metal brake lines for signs of corrosion, physical damage or leakage. Check flexible brake hoses for splits, cracking or signs of leakage. The brake lines are connected to the various brake components with hollow fittings called flare nuts or line fittings. Because flare nuts are hollow they are susceptible to damage if a normal open ended wrench is used to remove them. Flare nut wrenches, sometimes called line wrenches are special open ended wrenches designed to slide over the brake line and still provide maximum grip on all sides of the fitting. Recommendations: Flare Nut Wrench set Penetrating sprayOperation: Brake hardware is a term used for all of the springs, clips, guide pins and other misc. pieces that hold the brake pads and calipers in place and guide their movement during brake application. Advice: Check for corroded, bent, worn out or broken springs, guide pins or clips. Damaged or worn out brake hardware can cause uneven wear on the new brake pads. To ensure the best results from your brake job, the brake hardware should be replaced with the new brake pads. Recommendations: Spray Brake cleaner Wheel bearing grease Wheel sealOperation: The parking brake on a drum brake system has a series of cables that when actuated from the driver's compartment moves the parking brake levers on both rear wheels, forcing the rear brake shoes against the friction surface of the drums to hold the vehicle in place. Advice: With the parking brake disengaged and the drum removed, check to ensure that the brake shoes are fully seated at the top and bottom anchors. If not the parking brake cable may be sticking internally and holding the brake shoes partially applied. A sticking parking brake cable should be replaced. Never adjust the parking brake cable until after normal brake shoe adjustment has been made. After normal brake shoe adjustment if the parking brake still does not hold the vehicle stationary, then the parking brake cable can be adjusted.Operation: Flushing the brake fluid removes old or contaminated brake fluid from the system replacing it with fresh brake fluid. Advice: Brake fluid is a hygroscopic fluid, which means that it is in its nature to absorb moisture from the air. How do i take off the brake drums on a 2003 chevy cavalier


After you remove the tire, the drim should slide off. If it doesn't then try using a rubber mallet and gently tap on the outside edge as you pull on it. Sometimes you also need to tap on the drum in the center part. I have sprayed penetrating lubes like WD-40 or PB Blaster into the seam at the center. You may also have to back off the parking brake cable or even use the adjuster to back off the shoes.

The drum isn't leaking, either the wheel cylinder is leaking or the line is leaking

Pulsation in brake pedal and rear end hops during braking


What happens is if you have a bad front wheel bearing when you brake that wheel will turn in or out,when this happens it throws the four wheel alignment out and since this is a solid rear axle,it's forcing it to flex on the suspension,wich could cause the rear tires to bite on the outside edge of one tire and the inside edge of the other,thats one possible the other would be that the rear brakes are are not slowing the wheels evenly causing the same issue.I saw this problem with a bad front wheel bearing on a Nissan Pathfinder but not as pronouced due to the independent rear suspension. Check the front wheel bearings,which of course will mean getting the calipers off the rotors,and then check for any movement in the rotor,if there is check the hub nut,if it's loose tighten it and check for play in the rotor if there is still play that's going to be caused by a bad bearing.You can check the braking in the rear with a simple spring scale(like the ones used for fishing),with the wheels removed have someone apply enough pedal pressure to just engage the brakes but still allow movement attach the scale hook to a wheel stud and pull until it starts to move and note how many pounds of pressure it takes to move the hub.If it's uneven chech your adjusters and even them if needed and then retest,if still uneven you'll need to bleed them again.As far as the dark black substance in the fluid I would say you may gotten a contaminent in the fluid.Brake fluid gets kind of a rusty reddish residue when it breaks down.If I missed anything or you need clarification don't hesitate to ask I'm home all day.Hope this helps solve your problem.

Rear brakes uneven breaking as per mot tester


The Chardes have a diagonal split system, so one of the front discs is plumbed to the diagonally located rear drum.

You may need to check the front brakes too and that they have been bleed properly.

Other common cause of uneven braking are:

seized wheel cylinder;
brake hose obstruction or weakend wall;
weak pull off spring on shoe;
uneven drum roundness;
compensator/proportioning valve dicky.

i think your aware of how to change the brakes if im right and your problem is the rusted drum doesnt want to come off the only way to get the old drum off is to remove adjuster plug from behind drum dustshield and adjust the shoes so that there not even close to the braking area of the drum then try and wiggle the drum off of the assembly if it is not coming off then you need to use the old nylon hammer on the drum and i mean you must hit the drum from side to side trying by hand to wiggle the drum off its a tight fit and you need to strike the drum on the face not on the fins not wanting to damage with persistance and care and patience you will eventually be able to remove the drum to service brakes take care and good luck with it
