SOURCE: pontiac sunfire valve noise

If it's a ticking noise that speeds up with the speed of the engine, it's a worn valve lifter.
You can try tightening it down by taking the valve cover off and tightening the bolt on the rocker arm, but don't tighten it too much, you will end up with other problems.

My son ran his 2004 Pontiac sunfire low on oil, it stalled and now won't start, crnks over but sounds funny. What should I check

sounds like low compression and maybe a dead engine, have a qualified / competent mechanic take a look at it.
Running without oil/ little oil will lead to damage of the bores the valves ..the bearings, anything that needs oil. It may be that the engine needs a rebuild. A diagnosis from a good garage should reveal the problem.
I t may be that the damage is remediable if you are lucky and not much has been caused.

1996pontiac sunfire2.4motor no compression number 2 cylnder

more than likely is a burnt./bent valve. I would remove the head as sometimes the seat insert becomes loose and results in head work to fix. No compression can also mean broken rings or scored bore so the head will have to come off to determine exactly what happened .

Low compresson #3 cylinder on 2002 sunfire 2.2litre engine

low compression and I assume you have the reading from a compression check can mean 1 of 3 things---the hydraulic tappets for that cyl are jammed full open so holding the valve open,or there is a broken ring( check by putting some oil --4-6 squirts from an oil can-- and retest compression-- or you have a burnt valve or cracked valve seat. Cheapest is to replace head from wreckers but which ever way you go it will be dollars

1996 Pontiac Sunfire engine shakes and acts like it wants the shut off when at stop light.

Sounds like you have a bad cylinder...
This could be due to a number of reasons...
No spark at one cylinder, due to a bad spark plug, coil, or wire.
No fuel due to a bad injector
Bad cylinder with low or no compression

Does it have spark at the spark plugs? Does it have fuel pressure? Does it have injector pulse? Does it have any compression?

We've replaced the MAP sensor and coil pack in my daughters 1999 pontiac sunfire. It's a 2.4L, DOHC but the engine is shaking when it idles. We think it may have a broken motor mount, but when the engine...

do a compression test of the cylinders, could be a burnt valve, from what you describe engine is missfiring on idle and running on all cylinders at higher revs

Black smoke

black smoke out of exhaust? if so, piston rings or maybe valve or vavle seats. For piston rings, motor needs to be rebuilt. For valves, neads a valve job. Either way, big money.
