I would trust the smoke and noise from the engine rather than a faulty temp gauge. have you checked the coolant level in the radiator and not the reservoir. The temp gauge will not give you any indication of overheating if there is no coolant to make it work

SOURCE: FUEL PUMP MAKES NOISE PRESSURE GAGE READS 40 PSI

Fuel pump is bad. At idle pressure should read 50 PSI. Replace with original manufacture fuel pump after market pumps will burn out fast and are unreliable from my experience. Also could have a bad fuel regulator but that only works while driving down the road full throttle. You can unhook the fuel rail pressure regulator and that will give it full fuel and the pressure reading should read 60 PSI while it is running. If you turn the engine off and turn the key to run position it should read 50 PSI and hold for 60 seconds, if it drops below 30 PSI after 30 seconds Pump is defective. Many pumps are going bad here of late as people have been running them less than ¼ tank and this kills the pump. The fuel cools and lubricates the pump so the lower the fuel level the worse it is on the pump below ¼ tank. Not to hard of a job to do if you want instructions let me know.

SOURCE: I have a 4 cylinder

If the auxilary fan is working it will help keep the radiator cooler but only if the ac/or defrost is on. Is the radiator fan coming on when it is suppose to? Have seen issues with fan switches on these which control the radiator fan. There are 2 fan switches on the driverside of the of the head one sits horizontal and the vertical. The ones I have experienced the most issues with are the horizontal ones not signaling to turn the hi speed fan on when it is needed.

diff overheating is from incorrect mesh of the crownwheel and pinion
that can be from too little clearance , too much clearance of failing bearings and too much preload on the pinion bearings
it can also be from incorrect oil level in the diff to the bottom of the threads of the fill plug
it is time to pull the diff and check the bearings
the problem will most likely be the bearing behind the pinion as that one takes all the load
diffs normally run hot but it is the escaping oil that is the problem
that could be from bearings on the pinion allowing the lip of the flange seal to not seal properly

Change your thermostat,The car is probaly over heating. You keep on driveing it when it does that. You will do serious damage to your engine. Is the check engine light on? Allso any other warniing light. While the car is in operation. Is there guages in the car? If there is keep a eye on your temperture gage if it is going into the hot zone, If it is your vehicle is over heating.

Runnin thru antifreeze. is there a certain kind of antifreezze to use on yhe saturn sl

The 2000 Saturn SL came from the factory with Dex-Cool antifreeze (The Pink stuff) I don't know what your engine has in it now...it may have been changed.

If your car is "runnin thru antifreeze", the thing you should be concerned the most with is WHERE is the antifreeze going? If your engine and cooling system is working properly, you should not have to add any antifreeze at all. Adding antifreeze and not finding out and repairing the reason it was low, is a good way to totally destroy an engine.

If the car was recently serviced and they did the diff oils, the wrong oil or a 'friction modifier' was not added.Limited slip diffs need a different oil to other diffs. The noise you hear is the clutch plates inside the diff, shuddering. In a straight line, the noise goes away.Hope this helps

Temperture Gage

First of all, it doesn't sound like your thermostat is working correctly to keep good hot/warm air coming , so I would change that, or have it changed for better heating inside. If you lift the hood & look in front of your radiator, On the engine side, you'll see a fan attached to, or in front of the radiator. It won't come on until the coolant temperature gauge gets up to proper operating temperature. Without getting in to too much detail, have your thermostat changed, and my guess is everything else will start working as it should, and whoever does the work, should know enough to check the fan operation when they do the thermostat.
