What causes mains fuse to blow ?

A large short!. A short is a hot wire unintentionally touching ground- a metal piece of the frame. It will immediately cause sparking and blow a fuse. Also, an electric motor can have an internal short and blow the fuse for that circuit.
To find what is blowing the fuse, you have to follow every circuit that fuse protects until you find the source of the short. Look for burnt wires, like maybe too close to exhaust. Also a shorted wire can be bundled within a wiring harness, touching other wires and blowing a fuse. Since it is a main fuse, you will probably need a wiring diagram to trace all the circuits which that fuse protects. Try to isolate parts of circuits, like disconnecting the electrical connector at the ignition switch and then see if a new fuse blows. Keep working through each circuit like that until you see results. If some part or component is disconnected and the fuse doesn't blow, then you may be onto it- it could be that part you disconnected, or the wiring associated with the part.
Find a wiring diagram and see what all is part of that fuse. Good luck.

I have a 6200 and the Pto stopped working and the warning lights on the dash are constant.i have found that the fuse keeps blowing it's a 30 amp fuse which is a main one I think. Any ideas

Electric PTO. The motor is probably shorted. Easiest way to see is unplug it, put the fuse back in. If the fuse doesn't blow, replace the motor. If it does blow, trace the wires to the short in them.

Citroen xsara picasso 2.0hdi battery fuse keeps blowing.

If it's the main Fuse, rated above 40Amps, then usually only two components are directly connected to this circuit. The starter motor and the alternator. Both can get critical short to ground, that may blow such fuse. The thick battery cable goes directly to the starter motor and a smaller high amp wire is looped from there to the alternator. Third less likely would be main supply to ignition key switch.

Air ride fuses keep blowing

Hi Randy, I'm glad to help!

Randy there are 2 main reasons that fuses keep blowing when you use the system that has the problem. In your case I would say either you have a pump motor that has a dead short OR the wiring running to the motor is shorted to the frame somewhere on the vehicle. I would first unplug the motor and see if the short goes away. If the short goes away with it unplugged then check all the wiring going to the motor if you find that the wiring is good, then replace the motor. Hope this helps and have an awesome day Randy.

Heater has stopped working

(1) possible blown fuse.
Note that fuses blow for a reason - seek out the reason, or it will blow its new fuse too.

The main fuse block is located inside the left side of the engine compartment near the battery. There is also an interior fuse panel located just above the left side kick panel.

Interior Fuse Panel
The interior fuses simply unplug from the fuse panel. Use the fuse puller tool provided with your car to remove fuses from the panel. The tool is located on the back of the interior fuse panel cover.

(2) possible blower motor dead. See maintenance manual excerpt below.

(3) possible blower motor relay faulty. Location of Blower relay:
Under hood, drivers side, front engine area, rear of headlight housing; relay mounted on drivers side of radiator shroud.

See Figure below

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the glove box and the underdash cover.
  3. Detach the electrical connectors from the blower unit.
  4. Remove the blower unit-to-fire wall attaching bolts and remove the blower unit assembly.
  5. Remove the blower motor fan-to-motor fastener.
  6. Remove the blower motor-to-unit attaching bolts, then remove the motor.
  7. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

Blowing a 40 amp ignition fuse everytime I turn the key over. Suspect short in starter

It is a grounding problem.Your motor does not have a good ground from the motor to the frame..Bad starter will not blow a fuse. Clean all of the grounding straps especially the big ground wire from the battery to the motor. Bet if you check that little ground from the battery to the frame it will be melted..because the main ground to the engine is bad..

Main Cooling fan fuse keeps blowing.

Taking some of these things apart......

The temp gauge not registering a hot engine is a real bane on Zetec engines - check your coolant level before you do anything else. It may be that the system was airlocked when you filled it and that you got less coolant in than you thought you did.

It takes quite a short to blow a 50A fuse. First, make sure that the fan you've been looking at is actually the one protected by the fuse. Find out if there's anything else it protects. Check that all the fans/motors downstream of that fuse are free to turn (stalled fan motors are particularly good at blowing big fuses), and check all the cabling in between paying particular attention to places where wires pass close close the edges of parts that might chafe against them.
