When you whack something that hard and the engine stops immediately 99% of the time you sheared the Keyway between the Flywheel and the Engine crank. When this shears, the flywheel shifts which throws off the Ignition Timing. You need to take off the Recoil starter and then take off the Flywheel, Any small engine place will have a keyway replacement. The keyway Cost pennies

Turn the key on but dont start the engine, stomp the throttle pedal to the floor 3 times within 5 seconds and start the engine. The light should go out. If not repeat the procedure until it goes out.

I have a 1993 Plymouth Voyager mini-van. 4cyl. Right now it's in a barely working state. If my engine fails to start, I would jump and stomp my feet on the floor right above the gas tank, then it would...

sounds very much like the fuel pump which is in the tank is failing. You can accomplish the same result by tapping the tank with a hammer. You are on borrowed time because when the pump fails you won't be going anywhere.
