It could be an ignition problem, a fuel injector problem, or a mechanical problem in that cylinder-like a burned valve or a worn cam lobe. The first two are pretty easy to fix, but a mechanical problem involves some expense, removing the cylinder head to find and fix it. I would ask the owner if she would allow a compression test of the engine before buying it. A mechanical problem would show up as low compression in that cylinder. You would then be in a better position to judge the true value of the vehicle's engine, and how much you are willing to fork over.

nobody on earth can answer cost, nobody.
and varies by location on earth.
first off , it can be 3 things.
1: bad spark plug. $1.49
2: bad coil if cop engine, $50
4: bad injector, $50
5: bad ECU $400
6: bad cylinder, $2000 new engine.
or 2 things, or a burned valve. or or or or.
fate and entropy rules the universe.

Cylinder1 misfire

Hi Troy, It would help to know the engine, but even without that info I think if you replace the coil on top of the spark plug you'll most likely solve the problem. Regards John

My 1990 f0rerunner idles well but zero power from standing start or uphill, several people have told me it is only running on 5 cylinders. Is that possible

yes it is, you could have a cylinder misfire or a "dead hole" first things first do a compression check (remove coil wire, pull spark plugs one by one insert compression tester and bump starter till gauge registers) im not sure on your toyota but in general you need to be in the 140-200psi range, it just depends on the motor. once all the cylinders check out for compression then you need to find out why the cylinder is misfiring. make sure plugs and wires are in good shape, check cap and rotor, and finally check the coil. i recommend purchasing a chilton service manual, its only around 15-20 bucks and will save you alot of headaches
