If it is only a 5th gear problem then it is at the rear end of the box and can be associated with a failed rear bearing on the cluster shaft or a chipped tooth on one of the 2 gears involved. This is a larger gear driving a smaller gear and is subject to extra load . This problem was fairly common in the easi-loader vans when the capacity of the van was exceeded (overloaded) and driven considerable distances. The gears them selves in most cases were wearing out. Check the drain plug magnet for metal bits.

Why does my 98 dodge caravan have trouble climbing hills?

A transmission issue would give vibration tremendously during uphill. If you're not getting the vibration, or burning smell of transmission fluid, suspect clogged catalytic converters.

Losing power going up hills

sounds pretty normal. what speed do you try out the passing gear? anything above 35-45 mph and it will feel like neutral. Passing gear is actually only 1st gear. When you press down the pedal, it forces the transmisson to shift into low gear.

Is it the engine vibrating or the car? If its the car itself it sounds like u need to have the tires checked & balanced.

2002 avalanche, 168,000 miles, vibration at 30 mph and 70 mph under load. Noticable at 30, very noticale at 70. about a 5 mph band at both speeds. Not noticable in remainder of speed band including over 70...

I'd guess you have a tire out of balance, it sets up a harmonic around 30 to 35 mph, and at twice that speed, or 70 mph. I suspect if you drove it at 120 to 140 mph, you'd find another one. Could also be a tire that has a belt that has failed.

How many miles on this set of tires, did you get a lifetime road balance on them? Hazard warranty? How soon before you need new tires. Need to take all of these into account, but need to correct the problem before you have a tire failure and a wreck.

Talked to Buick/GMC mechanic at the dealership claiming everyone was giving me different answers/things to replace. He said undoubtedly it was cv joint/half shaft. Changed driver's side, that fixed it. Another give away was it wasn't as bad when car was cold, but got worse as it drove a few minutes, i.e. everything got hot, expanded and therefore was looser.

The main clue was it wasn't RPM specific, bearings were okay and I didn't feel it in steering wheel so much as the whole car in a given RPM range despite gear (not the engine or front end of tranny, i.e. torque converter. Rotating tires had no effect.

Mazda b2200, 1989 109000 miles. Vibration, seems to be in the front end, when moving between 30-40 mph, 3rd or 4th gear. Vibration still exists when not in gear, manual transmition. Tires are new and...

I have the same thing but mine is between 45-50 mph. I read about this a while back in a magazine for people that pull campers, the problem exists in all vehicles although its not as noticeable in every thing you ride in. There is a certain "point" at which your speed and engine speed reach, that causes a phenomonon that causes a vibration. Engineers relate it to "harmonics" which is a similar issue but in the electronic field of study. There is nothing you can do for it, and it varies from unnoticeable in some vehicles to driving you insane in my 1989 Mazda B2200. I had an '89 Ford F-150 that did it at 35 mph and a 2001 Dodge Diesel that did it at 45 mph, but those were the only three vehicles I've ever driven and noticed it.
