Take it to a mechanic or a auto parts store have them read the code with a OBD scanner. That will tell you why the light is on.

SOURCE: What does the engine malfunction warning light indicate

the only thing the light tell you is the computers sensors have seen a problem. you need to get the codes out of the cars computer
you need the use of a scan tool
some auto parts stores will scan your car for you for no charge.
get your codes and let us know and we will help find your problem.
also when they check your codes have them erase them and see if they come back

SOURCE: Malfunction indicator lamp

The Malfunction Indicator Lamp or MIL (Also called the check engine light or service engine soon light) comes on when the on board computer detects an issue with the operation of the engine or transmission.

The best thing to do is to take the vehicle to an auto parts store like Autozone and have them hook up their scan tool to the vehicle and read the code. They can read it, tell you what it is and also tell you what the code means.

If it is pointing to a faulty component or sensor and you replace or repair the component the the light will go off on its own after the computer sees that the malfunction is no longer present.

You can have the code cleared, but if whatever caused the light to come on in the first place is not addressed then it will just come back on eventually.

SOURCE: starter will not turn off, 1998 toyota tacoma

Either the starter has failed or you have a bad ground. I would say starter.

My battery light and oil temp light stays on in my mazda 1998 MPV

The battery light is usually an indicator of a failed alternator or bad cables causing low power to your electrical system. Without it, your car will run off of battery power until it is discharged and then shut down. Check all connections and test the alternator. If you dont have the facilities to do so, most auto parts chain stores can do it for you right in the parking lot.
As for the oil temp light, this is only a cause for concern if its happening with the vehicle at full operating temperature. If its steady on with a cold engine, then just the sensor is bad. Now....if its an oil "pressure" light, thats a completely different story. Do not run the engine until its sorted out. I have never owned a Mazda, so im not 100% on exactly what the light means, but its unusual to have an oil "temp" light. Is your serpentine belt intact?

The engine light came on in my 1998 Toyota Tacoma truck and is now running rough. I had a major tune up 8,000 ago and keep the oil and everything up to date.

You need to scan your car to see whats going on because anything can fail without a warning even if you take care of it really good. Take it to an autozone and they will scan it for you for free and will give you the Code. Good luck

Engine Malfunction Indicator- What does it mean

Hi!! The Engine Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) or Check Engine Light, is the visual signal the computer turns on when there is a problem with the Engine Performance. The Check Engine Light comes ON when there is a problem with the Emissions, Fuel, Evap., ABS systems among other things. The codes can be retrieved using an OBDII scanner if your vehicle was made after 1996.
If your Check Engine Light is ON, you can take your vehicle to AutoZone, Checkers or similar Auto Parts store to get the PCM or Vehicle Computer scanned for trouble codes. This is a FREE service they provide to all of their customers.
Good Luck and have a Merry Christmas!! A HELPFUL - 4 THUMBS - rating for this solution would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for using FixYa.

What is the check gauges light

CHECK GAGES light (1) indicates a potential engine failure(low oil pressure, low coolant, coolant overheating) has occurred.
· Check gages and shut down engine. Gages should read as follows: Oil pressure 5 to 10 psi (34 to 69 kPa) at idle; Water Temp gage below 230 degrees (110 C).
· Check engine oil level (Para 2-11) if OIL PRESS gage indicates low reading. Check coolant level (Para 2-11) if Water Temp gage indicates high reading. Notify Unit Maintenance if levels are low.

If CHECK ENGINE light (2) is on, check engine oil pressure gage (3) and water temperature gage (4). If both indicate normal, proceed with mission and then notify Unit Maintenance. If either one does not indicate normal, stop engine immediately and notify Unit Maintenance

Flickering oil light

This could be two unassociated problems; the flickering oil light can indicate that the pressure sensor for the idiot light is failing- this is not uncommon, the other can be a failed temperature sensor sensor on the main radiator.
The low oil pressure condition may also be indicative of a worn engine part or parts. It would make sense to have the actual oil pressure checked in a shop to see if it is in the normal range which should lay between ~30 & 60 pounds depending on engine RPMs and engine temperature. The idiot lights trigger at around 4-5 pounds and this is really pretty late for a warning; if the pressure is actually that low, not only lubrication is too little but the cooling effect of the circulating oil is inadequate.
If it was my car, I would replace both sensors before getting too worried. The cost of these together (parts only) should be well under $50 US.
