After start go to D and then to 3 and 2. Usually 3 should get you enough power up or down a hill. What is hard about changing gear?
WHAT vehicle is it?

Sputtered out and now it won't stay running; dies when put in gear.

Mass air flow , crank sensor . I wouldn't discount anything . Having a scan tool that can view engine sensor data would be a great help too , testing fuel pressure and flow and back pressure test the exhaust .

2003 Chevy Avalanche won't start (incorrect gear indicator)

PRNDL Display
The instrument panel cluster (IPC) displays the selected gear position as determined by the powertrain control module (PCM). The IPC receives a class 2 message from the PCM indicating the gear position. The PRNDL display blanks if:
• The PCM detects a malfunction in the transmission range switch circuit.
• The IPC receives a class 2 message indicating the park position and the column park switch indicates a position other than park, open input.
• The IPC detects a loss of class 2 communications with the PCM.

Could be the transmission range sensor . Testing would need to be done , hooking up a scan tool ! Doing electrical testing etc...

Ignition stuck key won't turn to start car!

Gear shift is not totally in the park position - had the same problem with a 2011 Acura TL - a rubber band kept the gear shift lever from totally seating in the park position.

Transmission doesn't want to go into 3 without manaully shifting into 2 gear

Check the transmission fluid level, by the book, usually with the motor running in park or neutral, find out which one.
If that's ok, start looking for a bad vacuum line or connection. Any vacuum leak can throw off the transmission shifting. Try to pull each connection off, if it comes off easy, check to see if it is split or swollen. My Ford uses hard plastic vacuum lines, they break.

High RPM shifting?

seems as if the trans isnt shifting as it should and needs to be checked (could be the shift solenoid not working properly or gears are sticking)

We put the #1 piston up top dead on my 2001 Daewoo Lanos top cam gears are lining up perfect but it is hard to see the timing mark on bottom gear. It threatens to start but won't like it is still off...

hope fully you didnt get it out too many teeth because these engines bend valves, any more than 2 teeth either way and trouble!!! arrow on crank gear aligns up with mark in plastic cover wipe with rag to see its hard to see sometimes if its this type

1: Manual Gear Transmission is hard or jams when shifting from 4th to 5th gear and reverse 2: Radiator water/coolant level remains the same, initially the water/coolant level is used up or dropped. 3:...

1. Your clutch is not releasing. This is commonly caused by a leaking slave cylinder. Replace it.
Could also be an indicator of really hard driving.
2. Leaks like this usually don't fix themselves.Flush the rad, replace it it the bottom fins are rotted, double check the themostat and the hoses.

3. Bent in at the bottom? Someone has hit a curb, HARD! You've bent the lower control arm and this has to be replaced. If this was just a control arm bush (these are replacable with a shop press) you'l usually hear rattling.
