There could be many reasons for it stalling out at lights. The first things I would check is the battery and alternator. The auto parts stores will check both for free.

Check the battery and the Alternator. Sometimes with these Saabs, when the alternator or the battery start to go bad, you will have many different symptoms all to do with just one issue. You can remove the battery and the alternator, take it to a parts store and they do free testing on those and they can tell you if either is bad or not. The Alternator needs to be out of the vehicle to be tested.

My 1995 Mazda 626 alternator keeps going bad. i have changed it 3 times now and after about a week or so of driving the batter light comes back on. What is causing my alternator to keep breaking?

The solution I usually recommend is to try a 'lifetime' warranteed alternator from a major automotive retail outlet. Higher quality parts are put into such a unit vs. the 1 year warranteed alternators.

This is just a general rule I go by.

If you already have a lifetime warranteed alternator, I would try a different brand or company.

Where did you buy this alternator? And how much was the unit?

Generally, I would look to spend over $100 for a good alternator with higher quality parts in it.

If the problem persists, one might want to go to an alternator/starter shop or auto electric specialty shop to determine what is causing the alternator to go bad so often.

However, I suspect that it's just bad parts from the get go.

Have the diode checked out in the alternator. If the diode is weak its going bad and will make the light come on. Also a weak belt tensioner will do just that although your described symptoms does not lead to that
The diode lets the current run one direction to create a DC charge. If the diode gets weak the current will reverse causing an AC charge making the light to go on. A reverse current will not allow the battery to get charged up neither

Make sure your alternator isnt faulty first if you haven't already. A faulty alternator can intermittently produce sufficient voltage, but cause the symptoms you describe. A new battery seems to 'fix' it but when the battery is drained(because the faulty alternator is unable to keep it charged) ...the symptoms return. Good Luck

02 F250 7.3 battery light just came on, is this indicating a bad alternator or battery. Other than the light there are no symptoms so far

The light can be on because the charge or ALT fuse under the hood in the fuse/relay center is blown, or the alternator itself is not producing enough voltage.

This is not just because of the alternator, you got to replace the rectifier circuit too. If the rectifier is not working good then the battery will not charge then you will get all the symptoms what ever you mentioned

Lo-beams not working

Hi manolonusa,

It may have something to do with your headlights, but my first thought is they are just a symptom of another problem.

I'd check on the alternator. If the ALT fails, a good battery will keep the car running for quite a while. Sometimes the first symptoms are the dimming of the headlights. So:
  • Make sure belts are tight.
  • Get a meter and test the output voltage while its running (be careful when doing this).
  • Check the voltage at the battery when stopped and when running.
  • Same thing with headlights on and off.
Get back to me with the results. Once the alternator is ruled out we can check a possible headlight problem. But this way, at least you won't be stranded somewhere with a dead battery.
