Question about 2002 Volvo S40
I am not real familiar with volvo's but the valve cover just rests on top of the cylinder head, basically.
Here is a how to with volvos:
You will need tools, as well. I am not sure how the spark plugs sit in the volvo - the how to mentions they fit on top. Make sure you do not need a tool for this (I have a spark plug remover that is magnetic which helps A LOT). You would need a ratchet set, though, with different size heads. Not sure what size yours will be or what tools you have. Also, have a mallet just in case it is seized on. GENTLY tap the sides if it does not lift off, after you remove the plugs and nuts.
If you are going to take off the valve cover, it may be a good time to check the gasket there. You can order one online or locally. If you are replacing yours, pull off and scrape off any reside. Clean it up before putting a new one on.
This is a pretty straight forward process - reverse what you did when putting things back on. Just don't lose any pieces and you'll be good to go.
Also, they say to disconnect the negative battery line. You should be fine here with not disconnecting but I am not endorsing not disconnecting it! You just need a ratchet for this - black is usually negative unless it was modified in some way. DO NOT touch the positive with your tool when removing the negative or touch the positive with the negative! Just set the wire to the side after removing it.
