Question about 1987 Toyota Pickup

Automatic transmission hesitant or won 't upshift

Have a 1987 Toyota pickup with automatic. When normal driving the transmission was very hesitant to up-shift. It did at times after almost flooring it and jumping off the throttle. Now not up shifting at all. I goes in all gears fine( reverse, neutral etc)but will not up-shift when driving.

SOURCE: 2005 Toyota Corolla with 36,000 miles Transmission now "jumps" into gears

hi,
when the check engine light comes on, your car goes into a mode where instead of everything being normal, things are forced, to try and compensate for something else being wrong. It most likely does need a new timing belt, and a complete tuneup INCLUDING plugs and wires. we have a 1984 toyota corolla and it purrs like ground rice, I suggest the tuneup to continue proper rice production.

There is an electronic module called ECT under the dash that controls the transmission ( a small computer), however if you had your vehicle serviced in the recent past the wiring connector (a 3 Pin connector) under the Drivers side (LHD) just before the T/case could have become loose or the wires broken, check this connector out.

SOURCE: automatic transmission, gear shift stck in park,

There is a solenoid that controls this. The brake pedal energizes the solenoid. You can bypass this by popping the little clip down by the shifter and sticking a key into the slot to get it to a garage for repair.

How many quarts of transmission fluid is required for a 1987 toyota pickup automatic transmission?

You need to look up the procedure for changing
& checking trans fluid

If you have a dip stick then you just warm it up
& keep adding until it is at the correct level on the stick

For a pan drop I would get at least 6 quarts

Ask that question using Google

Measure what you take out also

What do the settings S-D and plus minus on trasmission shifter m

The plus and the minus allows you to "manually" shift the automatic transmission; sort of like a manual transmission, without a clutch......minus = downshift, + = upshift.
Just put it in "D" and drive on.

Ect power?

The ECT button stand for Electronically Controlled Transmission. In short, what the button does is change the upshift points for the auto trans. Normally, the 1-2 upshift is at 15-19 mph, pressing the button changes the shift mph form 15-19 to 19-22/23. More often than not, this feature wiooould be used if you are hauling a heay load, and the ECT gets you up to speed faster, via the longer time as mentioned above re the shift mphs. Not very useful with normal driving, it really does not do much without a heavy load.

This is the downfall of a new toyota congrads you can relate to me i Own a 2008 Scion tC these new toyota's are driven by what is called "Drive By Wire Throttle system" there will always be a delay in the throttle response espcially in newer toyota's with an automatic transmission hence the newer ones have a 5 speed automatic transmission instead of the 4 speed automatics kind of a poor design on there end with the Drive By Wire. Sorry this is a problem that happens to be a design flaw on toyota's and some people notice it more than others.

Vitz gear specification

D means drive (normal driving) & gears upshifts by accelerating
S means Sport mode :it's same "D" mode but upshifts & downshifts more higher (more quickly) like in rallys sporty driving
