I have a 383 Stroker with a Holley 4 Barrel... It was starting and running just fine when all of a sudden one day it would crank but not start so I noticed as I played with the ignition toggle switch and kept cranking it would act like it would want to fire... Eventually it did start using that method... Now it won't start using that method at all, it just sits and cranks ... I changed all the plugs and wires and put new distributor cap on and still nothing... It does have a MSD 6AL & MSD Blaster 3 coil.... Could it be the coil causing this problem or the toggle switch?

Turning the switch to the run position should give 12 volts to positive side of coil otherwise bad switch

A common problem with the 90's engines was the ECTS (electronic coolant temperature sensor) going bad. Seems when attempting to start the car, the computer in the car will only allow enough gas it thinks is needed to start. When a car is cold, the computer gives more gas initially, until the engine warms up, then gives less gas. When starting a warm engine, less gas is needed.

If the sensor goes bad, it always tells the computer that the engine is hot. The computer give less gas to a cold engine, and sometimes it will start, sometimes not. Its a pretty cheap part, and a do it yourself one, just research it a bit on line...good luck

Do you have voltage to the positive post of the ignition coil with the ignition key turned to run? You do not mention that you have done any testing for system fault codes either, this is a very important test.

you need to remove the air cleaner and wile having someone crank the engine spray some carburetor cleaner down the intake, if the engine starts then check your fuel pressure, should be around 34 psi if not check for a plugged fuel filter if filter is ok replace the fuel pump

if fuel pressure is ok check to see if you can see any fuel spraying into the intake if you don't see any fuel then you will need to test the fuel injection system. it could be a ECM or a bad ignition module

try the ignition module first (we see them fail allot )

Inside the distributor cap under the rotor is the camshaft sensor with a 4-wire plug. You have to bump the engine over with until a notch in the mount for the rotor lines up with the sensor. Just two bolts retain in, T20 Torx I believe.

sounds like your coil is getting hot then when it cools down the engine re starts check coil look for hot spot or touch it see if it is hot it should be cold.

I installed a holley 4 barrel carburetor in my 1983 buick regal , but it starts fine but won't idle ?


Check your vacuum hoses. Holley aftermarket may not have as many vacuum ports as OEM QuadraJets, and you may have a vacuum line that isn't plugged into anything...or you may have a vacuum leak around the carb base gasket. Also, does the Holley have an electric or manual choke? Is it connected?

Who knows what you diidn't do right on this. Start by running a fualt code test on the OBD1 system.

Sounds like the engine can't breath,
make sure pcv valve is good,or oil cap is vented.
your engine is building up pressure and has no where to vent,so it blows the easiest thing,the dip stick

No timeing marks on a chevy 383 stroker engine


you could bring it up on tdc on comp stroke and make your own mark on crank pulley and block then at least you know where tdc is and google some 383's that have close to same equip as you and see what degree they are running or just play with it and see how it runs .
