WILL A BLOWN HEATER CORE CAUSE A CAR TO OVERHEAT


No a heater core alone will not cause a vehicle to overheat. The heater cores sole purpose is to transfer heat generated by the engine to the blower motor so that you can get heat from your car vents. A person could technically remove the heater core from the vehicle and connect the hoses together to bypass it, and the car will run as if nothing happened, minus the lack of heat in the vents.

If the car is overheating, there are three mai issues that could be happening. 1) The radiator is blocked and not allowing coolant to be cooled off before returning to the engine.
2) The water pump is broken. The engine relies on this pump to move the coolant throughout the engine. It may not leak as long as the gasket is alright but the impeller ( small fans on the inside of the water pump ) could not be turning.
3) Lastly and most commonly is a faulty Thermostat. The thermostat is the valve which opens and closes at certain tempuratures and decides if hot coolant stays in the engine or circulates to the radiator to be cooled off. If the thermostat fails, unless you have a failsafe one, will fail in the closed position keeping the hot coolant in the engine and causing it to overheat.

The thermostat is by far the cheapest of the issues so consider changing that first along with a coolant flush before considering putting a new rad or waterpump. You can usually get a thermostat, 2 jugs of coolant and a flush kit for about 50$ at pretty much any parts store. Becareful however not to drive a overheating vehicle as gasket burning and head warpage can occur, which will require rebuilding th head.

I have a p1135 code does that mean it the o2 sensor cause i have change the mass air sensor


Code P1135 is a vehicle specific code for selected Toyota vehicles - it really helps to know what car you are working on...Year, Make, Model, Engine Size, Automatic or Manual Transmission, etc. There may be Technical Service Bulletins that apply to your vehicle that cover things like reprogramming the engine controller to correct this code, etc. Nobody can give you that information if they don't know what kind of vehicle we are talking about.

In general, the code description for code P1135 is "Air Fuel Ratio Sensor Circuit (California Emissions )"
The possible causes are
1. Open or shorted Air Fuel Ratio Sensor (AF) circuit
2. Faulty AF sensor
3 AF sensor heater or heater circuit shorted or open
4. Engine Control Module (ECM) Fault

The Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF) cannot cause this code - this is a "CIRCUIT" code, not a not a "LEAN" or "RICH" Oxygen Sensor (or AF Sensor) code. The MAF can only cause lean or rich codes.

Most of the time, this code is caused by the sensor itself, however, as I mentioned earlier, there are Technical Service Bulletins for several Toyotas that involve reprogramming of the Engine Computer.

The diagram in my haynes manual does not show some parts that are in my 2001 jetta tdi 1.9 turbo. i ran a diognostic and it says glow plug curcuit a malfunction, i changed the plugs and tested the coolant...


In addition to the 4 primary glow plugs, the cooling system also has 3 Coolant Glow Plugs to help provide extra heat to the cooling system in order to warm-up the vehicle's interior more quickly, and enhance overall engine warm-up time. (Example - Some Mercedes diesel engines use electrical heaters in the cabin because their engine is so thermally efficient.)
Likewise, this auxiliary source of heat from the 3 Coolant Glow Plugs is necessary because of the VW 1.9 TDI engines outstanding efficiency, which wastes very little heat.


The 3 Auxiliary Coolant Glow Plugs are located at the end of the aluminum cylinder head (in a protruding flange) directly below the vacuum (brake booster) pump, which also connects to a coolant hose.

The 3 Auxiliary Coolant Glow Plugs use two (underhood) relays which are monitored and controlled by the ECU. During a cold start, the vehicle's interior temperature selector switch helps the ECU choose one of three modes depending on the amount of heat required to warm-up the coolant.

For example, Coolant Glow Plug #1 can be selected to operate all by itself, or #2 and #3 can operate together as a two-some, or lastly, all three glow plugs can form a triple source of heat for maximum enhancement of engine warm-up time.

After the engine is completely warmed up and the thermostat is open, the Coolant Glow Plugs normally shut-off and remain off unless the (thermally efficent) engine cools down sufficiently to have the computer signal them to come back on to keep the engine and cabin air warm. Extensive idling times at stop lights or in the driveway are scenarios where these glow plugs are most likely to recycle on and off.

In conclusion, the period of Preglow and Afterglow is determined by the engine's coolant temperature (during a cold or hot start), which helps the ECU select a predetermined time-cycle for the combustion chamber and / or Auxiliary Coolant Glow Plugs to follow.

Finally, one myth that needs to be immediately debunked, is the belief that the TDI's advanced Glow Plug System is linked to the opening of the driver's side door, which is false! It is also noteworthy to mention that some earlier VW diesel glow plug systems were operated in this manner, but not so with the advanced VW Jetta 1.9 TDI engine.

Over heating engine, can drive for 1 mile without damage?


Any engine, when cold, takes at least 3 miles before reaching operating temperature.. After reaching operating temp it still takes a mile or 8(depending on your vehicle) before "over" temperatures are reached. Therefore if needed, a vehicle can be driven several miles without any coolant/water at all before overheating and causing damage, if started from from cold.

AutoZone and Napa (and auto dealer parts departments) have illustrations that you can look at on thier computers if you know where the part is on your engine. (personal experience) I am sure there are several others also but the ones I mentioned all have the diagrams. They can tell you what the hose is called and will most likely have the hose in stock or can have it within 24 hours. In the mean time losen your radiator cap to the first notch so that the pressure will not build up and cause large amounts of coolant loss with a warm engine. Just go to the auto parts store and tell them your 1. Year, 2. make and 3. model of the vehicle and they will pull it up on the screen. Then do the point / ID routine and go from there. Cheers!

Engine light wenton, car heated up, car would not


If the engine overheated while driving, damage to the cylinder head gasket or engine block/cylinder head may have been done, which would prevent the vehicle from starting.

A standard engine compression check will tell the tale.

Hyundai 2001 engine light stays on


I have a 2001 Elantra, and the Check Engine light keeps coming on. Replaced the o2 sensor, 3 times, and flex pipe was replaced. The engine light came back on...original fault code was P0133............any ideas??

well first off i would just have the thermostat changed out cause this will flaux if bad and soon it will stick
engine temperature for most vehicles should run around 200 - 220
anything hotter your engine will melt

also clogs in radiator system can make over heat bugs in radiator clogs system
your a/c throw out bearing could be wearing down on vehicle and maken it run hotter because now the vehicle has to produce more force just to spin a/c compressor
but i wouldnt worry that right now doesnt sound like its it but keep eye on it


do you have digital gages for vehicle or manual switch cause for it getting cold while using heat makes it sound like there is a switch malfunction or digital guage mal. the wiring has some how been run backwards
