This CAN fry things but not always.
You could try and diagnose this yourself - if you have a multimeter.
First, you could check the volts on the battery and make sure it is reading. Should be about 13 volts. If not, get a jump and charge.

Second, you can test your fuses and make sure nothing got fried. You can buy a fuse kit for pretty cheap that will come with a test. Don't forget the fuses under the steering wheel area.

Third, you can test your alternator if you can get to it with the multimeter. You will have to check your car specs. You can test your starter, as well, but that can be complicated.

I do not know ford explorers but if you have a distributor, you'd want this checked as well. Same with your wiring. I would say that if you are not sure how to do these things, you will need it checked professionally.

SOURCE: MY 98 FORD EXPLORER CRANKS

You mean that the starter is turning (cranks) the engine but the engine won't start? Be sure it is getting fuel. Turn the key to the on position and you should hear the fuel pump in the fuel tank run for a few seconds. If so that is good. If the fuel is being delivered then possibly you have no spark which usually is the electronic ignition module. The only way to test it is to replace it. Your timing chain or belt could be broken or "jumped" as the third possibility. I am leaning toward ignition module being bad as they just die without warning and nothing can revive them.

SOURCE: I hooked my car battery up backwards on my 05

  • When you hooked the battery up backwards you blew the 100Amp main fuse. You have two fuse boxes. One under the hood and one under the steering wheel. i recommend a look at the fuses in general. Which that 100 Amp fuse may bring some life back to the car there could be some more stuff to look at depending on how much (if) any damage was done.

  • If you have any comments please feel free to leave them here.
  • Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa.

Regards, Tony
