SOURCE: air bag light

I encountered this problem when the voltage regulator attached to the alternator malfunctioned. It also caused the battery to over charge. The problem was corrected by replacing the alternator. Hope this helps.

Air bag light stays on in 1997 ford f-150

HI. This will essentially be an indication of SRS(air bag) module failure ,or an individual crash sensor may be malfunctioning. These sensors are locate all around the vehicle. You will need have the codes pulled by a certified ford code scanner tool to actually isolate the culprit. With that said; it will most likely be an issue that will concern one or more of the crash sensor mounted throughout the vehicle.

  • Worst case scenario will be total SRS module failure, which will require you to have the entire module replaced.

Airbag dashboard light keeps blinking. In 1997 Ford Thunderbird.

The air bag computer will have to be scanned and the code read to know what the fault the computer detects. The problem will have to be repaired for the light to shut off. Keep in mind, when the air bag light is illuminated the air bag system is deactivated. Meaning, in the event of a collision the bags won't deploy.

Unfortunately Ford doesn't supply a download for guides older than 1996.
If the changes were minor (they often are), the '96 version should help:

Air bag light

You can have the airbag light tested for the trouble code that is making the light blink, the most likely cause is the rotating contact that connects the steering wheel airbag to the steering column wiring, it is called the clock-spring contact, if you replace this part yourself make sure to follow factory procedures for disarming the airbag, if you don't and it goes off you will have a good chance of being injured or worse.
