Question about Cars & Trucks
When i drive or just turn the steering wheel to the left its hard to turn.you can hear air like it is being pumped.or like you are taking deep breath i hope you can understand me.Please help me.Thanks.
The only thing that would make steering real stiff,
would be the bearings on top of the front struts,or
a failed steering rack.
You should be changing the Power Steering Fluid on
all your vehicles every 3 years, along with the transmission
or they both will fail for sure
Add some LubeGard for P/S --- after you flush the steering
Make sure you don't get the purple & yellow bottle, that is for honda Dealers also have steering additive similar to lubegard
Bottom ball Joints may be shot as well, doubt they have grease
fittings, the new ones will if you install Moog or a quality brand, not
Ford Motorcraft parts

i have ran into 2 issues in these vehicles---if it binds while sitting still also, check the steering shaft, i have found the u-joints in the shaft tighten up and binds dangerously tight---if they are free, sounds like you may have a steering box issue or restriction in a line---hope this was helpful!!

What! Not likely the pump, if it has fluid. Most likely the steering rack is shot. Have a reman installed and flush the cooler or the new one will fail. Install a FILTRON magnetic filter, in the return line also. Use Mercon or Mercon V Fluid, not auto part store **** and never any sealers. If you want ,you could make up a blend of Lubegard and Mec V. I do all the above,If it isn't like a new car after all that, check out the ball joints , but especially the bearing assy on top of the struts. They could be half your stiffness. What causes these steering racks to fail ,is because, no one changes the fluid every couple years, just like you never flush brake fluid or trans fluid. I made a living in the trans business ,just on Taurus and Chrysler Caravans, for that very reason. Don't you just love neglect?

SOURCE: Steering wheel
What kind of noise, if growling and grinding check and replace wheel bearing. If thumping clunking type noise check steering intermediate shaft, makes noise in both directions.
